Class of 1959
"The gals still look splendid," says Tom Wolf ’59 about this photo
of members of the University of Wichita's Class of 1959 who
returned to campus this past fall.

Dear Editor,

Among the obituaries in the spring 2009 The Shocker was that for Jeneva Brewer, who was my instructor in the 1956 summer semester for calculus.

That was taught five days a week at 7 a.m. Yes, “a.m.” One is unlikely to forget a class taught at that dreadful time slot. Miss Brewer often came to class in her square dancing dress. We never asked and thus did not know whether she had danced all night or was soon to dance upon finishing her teaching duties.

Recalling this reminded me of several other notable faculty whose classes I had. That included not only the professors in my major, political science, but such others as David Bernard and Geraldine Hammond, whose obituaries appeared in The Shocker in recent years. I also enjoyed the piece on the University of Wichita class of 1958. The photographs included some folks I knew. Somehow, they have become grayer, and some of the guys are even bald. Yet the gals still look splendid.

Best,

Dear Editor:

Thanks for the great publication. I love reading about my alma mater. It was especially nice to read the article on the dance department’s trip to Taiwan (“Beautifully Challenged”). My son is a dance major at Western Oregon University, and will be going on a tour to China later this year.
