Charles “Cookie” W. Cookson ’47, JOURN, founder and publisher emeritus of American Oil and Gas Reporter, was honored during the 2006 International Oil History Symposium with the first Oil History Journalism Award for his work in establishing the Reporter. He resides in Wichita.*
Howard Kessinger fs ’52, former editor and owner of The Oberlin Herald now co-publisher and editor of The Marysville Advocate, has been inducted into the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame. He lives in Marysville, Kan.
Gregory L. Fowler ’56, BIO SCI, ’61 M BIO SCI, program director in the Hatfield School of Government and adjunct professor of biology and university studies at Portland State University and a clinical associate professor at Oregon Health and Sciences University, also serves as executive director and co-founder of Geneforum, a nonprofit group that promotes public education about ethical and social issues raised by new genetic technologies. Ronald W. Walters fs ’60, professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland, was a participant in Wichita’s 1958 lunch-counter sit-in to protest segregation. As such, he was involved in a Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum project highlighting the career of civil rights activist Chester Lewis. Walters lives in Silver Springs, Md.

He takes pride in Wichita being the first city in Kansas to do its own restaurant inspections and the only city to have a local ordinance banning the sale of cigarettes to minors. Rob E. Swinson ’77, ANTHRO, owner of RidesUSA, an amusement ride business, has been for the past four years the caretaker of an 1864 Hardee-Cleburne flag, one of 22 carried by the 32nd and 45th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry regiments of the Civil War. The flag, valued at more than $160,000, is being sold to a private collector in Florida and will be put on public display in a museum in Franklin, Tenn., where the flag fell in 1864. Duane E. Frazier ’85, JOURN, sportswriter for the Wichita Eagle, finished the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, his first marathon-length race. The Wichita resident ran the 26.2 miles in four hours, two minutes and 22 seconds.

Robert L. Hinshaw ’85, AA SOC SCI, ’87 AJ, former commander of the Sedgwick County Jail, is now the county’s undersheriff, who oversees administrative matters and directs policies and procedures. Hinshaw has served a variety of functions in his 27 years with the Sedgwick County sheriff’s office, including patrol deputy and bureau commander. He resides in Wichita.
Prentice F. Lewis fs ’85 was one of some 20 black teenagers and young adults who staged a sit-in at a Wichita drugstore in July 1958. The NAACP has recognized the Dockum Drug Store protest as the first lunch-counter sit-in in the country. Lewis lives in Wichita.

James “Jim” J. Pugh ’92, MATH ED, a math teacher at West High in Wichita, helped supervise the design and building of a 27-foot wind turbine. Students worked on the turbine during school, met after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and worked on the project outdoors on Saturdays. With assistance from Raytheon Aircraft, WSU and Westar Energy, the turbine was finished and dedicated in May. Pugh lives in Wichita.
