Melvin C. Coiner ’30, math, retired manager with Amerada Hess Corp., reports through his daughter Cheryl C. Peters that he is an avid gardener, “busy with church activities and ever proud of his college.” Coiner, who is 93 years old, lives in Tulsa, Okla.
Lawrence A. “Larry” Wallace ’42, econ, retired industrial relations specialist who retired as vice president with The Washington Post in 1980, has established a scholarship in his name in Wichita State’s Elliott School of Communication. He lives in Port Orange, Fla.*
James “Francis” Hesse ’46, psych, special counsel with Foulston Siefkin LLP, Wichita, has received a Lifetime Achievement award from the Wichita Bar Association for “sustained superior performance as an attorney, for achievements and accomplishments that have brought credit and recognition to the profession.” He lives in Wichita.
Max D. Johnston ’48, econ, retired insurance agent, is spending time during his retirement volunteering for a number of Wichita organizations, including Exploration Place (where they call him “Nature Max”), Trees for Life, Camp Discover, Episcopal Social Services, the Great Plains Earth Institute and the Boy Scouts. He and his wife, Helen M. (Majors) Johnson ’48, eng lit, retired librarian, live in Wichita.
Melvin H. Snyder ’50, m aeroe, professor and director emeritus of aeronautical engineering at Wichita State, is spending part of his retirement delivering 21 meals for Meals on Wheels every Monday with his wife, Kay. He also volunteers with high school students in the Boosting Engineers, Science and Technicians program. He lives in Wichita.*
Gifford M. Babcock ’51, soc, retired director of information services at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz., now spends four days a week building homes with Habitat for Humanity. He lives in Kerrville, Texas.*
Franklin M. Robertson ’59, el ed, an English and drama teacher at Shawnee Mission North High School, has been inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame. After more than 40 years in education, he plans to retire at the end of the 2002-03 school year. Robertson lives in Shawnee Mission, Kan.*

(Stevens) Sayfie ’64, art ed, ’66 m art s, a painter whose work has been described as “at once psychedelic and serene,” was selected as a finalist in the 51st Annual All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Donna J. (Hutley) Black ’68, sec ed span, ’79 m spg, ’87 sp ead, is principal at Wakarusa Valley School in the Lawrence, Kan., school district. Formerly the principal of Swaney School in the Derby, Kan., district, she earned that district’s administrator of the year award in 1996. Black lives in Lawrence.

George ’68, sec ed, ’70 m hist, assistant superintendent for management services at Olathe, Kan., district schools, has received training as a national examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. This training is handled by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md. Michael H. Urbom ’76, acct, is vice president of finance at the American Royal Association in Kansas City, Mo. He lives in Overland Park, Kan.
Richard R. Baker ’77, aj, retired FBI agent, oversees security at Ontario, a Los Angeles-owned airport in San Bernadino County. Baker headed the FBI’s Sacramento, Calif., office and was in charge of the bureau’s Oklahoma City office when a bomb destroyed the Murrah Federal Building there in 1995, killing 168 people. He lives in Sacramento.
Carmen E. (Glidewell) Harris ’77, acct, senior accountant at Idaho State University, has received an MBA with an emphasis in computer information systems from the university. Besides her 4.0 GPA, Harris names the highlight of her degree as “having my husband, Larry B. Ronald W. Holt ’77, m bus a, former KGE president, has been appointed to the newly created position of Sedgwick County director of culture, entertainment and recreation. As “fun czar,” Holt will oversee management of the Sedgwick County Zoo, the Kansas Coliseum, Lake Afton Observatory and the county park system. He resides in Wichita.*
