Comings, goings, appointments, retirements, honors, accolades and other personal alumni news. Former students are designated by fs. Honorary alumni are noted as hn. Members of the Wichita State University Alumni Association are identified by an asterisk (*). Membership dues support alumni publications as well as the many other programs and services that support higher education at Wichita State.

D. Cramer Reed ’37, BIO, retired physician, is the University of Kansas Alumni Association’s 2006 Honorary Medical Alumnus Award honoree. Named dean of the College of Health Professions at WSU in 1970, Reed became founding dean of the KU School of Medicine-Wichita in 1971. During his prolific medical career, he also served as an executive at Wesley Medical Center and developed programs for the Kansas Health Foundation in Wichita, where he lives.*

Julianne D. McLean fs ’46, a concert pianist and alumna of the Kansas City Conservatory and the Julliard School, attended a reunion of survivors of the sinking of the Andrea Doria, which was rammed by the SS Stockholm in dense fog off the coast of Massachusetts on July 25, 1956. Fifty-one people died, 46 from the Andrea Doria and five from the Stockholm. The 50th anniversary reunion event was held in New York. McLean resides in Wichita.

Donald “Don” W. Rude ’59, JOURN, ’61 M ENG, teaches English at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., and edits Conradiana, a journal of Joseph Conrad studies. He traveled to Europe last summer to deliver lectures on Conrad during a conference at Marie Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin, Poland, and at the annual meeting of the British Joseph Conrad Society in London. Rude lives in Blacksburg.*

Justus H. Fugate ’60, MATH, ’62 M MATH, has been elected chairman of the board of directors for Kansas Venture Capital Inc., the oldest venture capital company in the state. Fugate, who is a member of the WSU Foundation National Advisory Council and Board of Directors, lives in Wichita.*

Richard “Dick” S. Will ’60, ENG L/LIT, senior vice president of investments for Smith Barney in Austin, Texas, is chairman of the board for the American Chestnut Foundation, a non-profit  organization dedicated to restoring the American chestnut tree. He resides in Georgetown, Texas.*

Christine “Chris” F. (Collins) Paulsen-Polk ’62, ART, ’68 M ART HIST, has been recognized by the Wichita Arts Council for her efforts to promote outdoor sculpture in Wichita, where she lives.*

Dan J. Duncan ’64, M MUS ED, has retired from the music faculty at Eastern Kentucky University. He now lives in Centerville, Ohio.

Leonard “Len” W. Clark ’65, HIST ED, assistant athletic director at WSU, has been inducted into the Liberty (Lawrence, Kan.) High School Hall of Honor by the Lawrence Lions Alumni Association. He lives in Wichita.*

H. Craig Miner ’66, HIST, ’67 M HIST, is the author of Next Year Country: Dust to Dust in Western Kansas, 1890-1940, published by the University Press of Kansas. Miner, the Willard Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History at WSU, lives in Wichita.

Jay D. Keener ’67, SEC ED, ’74 M EAS, of AXA Advisors, has earned a Certificate in Retirement Planning from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Wichita.*

Sharon L. (Havely) Mallory ’67, PSYCH, ’73 M PSYCH, chaired the Wichita Arts Council’s 2006 Plane Crazy Committee. Plane Crazy, an auction of artist-decorated and celebrity-signed model airplanes, benefits the arts in Wichita, where Mallory resides.

Connie R. Dietz ’68, EL ED, ’71 M EL ED, director of education and work-based learning at WSU, serves on a Sedgwick County/Wichita task force to end chronic homelessness. Dietz lives in Wichita.*

Sally I. (Ludvickson) Roberts ’68, CDS, is associate dean of the school of education at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She lives in Shawnee, Kan.*

Ronald “Ron” L. Doty ’69, president of the Design Centre, has been recognized by the Wichita Arts Council for his contributions to the local arts community. He lives in Wichita.

Nancy J. (Elliott) Martin ’69, PSYCH, serves as chair of the WSU Foundation board of directors. She is the chief operating officer of Emergency Services PA in Wichita, where she lives.*

Dennis B. Pagenkopf ’69, BIO, ’72 NURS, is an independent distributor for Market America, a product brokerage and Internet marketing company. He resides in Wichita.

T. Michael Wilson ’69, ACCT, an attorney and partner with the Wichita law firm of Stinson Lasswell & Wilson LC, serves as president of the new Kansas chapter of the American Association of Matrimonial Lawyers. He lives in Wichita.

J. Yvonne (White) Cobbs ’70, EL ED, has retired after 26 years of teaching elementary school. She lives in Garnett, Kan.

O. Lee Elrick ’70, BUS ADM, president of Elrick & Associates Insurance Agency, served on the 2006 Chairman’s Council of the New York Life Insurance Co. He resides in Wichita.*

Sheldon H. Preskorn ’70, PSYCH, is president and CEO of the Clinical Research Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Kansas School of Medicine Practice Association. The institute was named among the Wichita Business Journal’s Best Places to Work in 2006. He lives in Wichita.

Richard C. Rawlings ’70, ECON, ’99 ACCT, is a program manager for the South Central Kansas Economic Development District. He resides in Augusta, Kan.

Richard J. Bowman ’71, BUS ADM, ’99 M BUS ADM, owner of Mechanical Concepts, has received the Chapter Award of Merit and the Regional Award of Merit from the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. He lives in Wichita.

Charles F. Harris ’71, HIST, an attorney and partner in the law firm of Kaplan McMillan & Harris, has written his first book, Captain Tough, Chief of Scouts, a biography of William S. Tough, a Civil War Union scout who served on the Kansas-Missouri border. Harris lives in Wichita.*

Sherilyn “Sherry” L. Lamm ’71, FREN, ’88 CSP, is director of career services and cooperative education at Newman University in Wichita, where she lives.

Rosemary I. (Sturdevant) Talab ’71, ENG L/LIT, Kansas State University professor of secondary education, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, during the spring 2007 semester. She lives in Manhattan, Kan.

David J. Bernstorf ’72, AERON E, is vice president of airworthiness, certification and technical engineering at Raytheon Aircraft. He lives in Wichita.*

Ronald G. Chapman ’72, ACCT, has retired from Cessna Aircraft Co. as senior vice president of customer service. He lives in Wichita.

George “Jolly” Rogers ’72, M PE, former track coach and athletic director at Bethel College, was inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He resides in Newton, Kan.

Elizabeth “Liz” M. Willis ’72, ART HIST, has opened the freelance event planning and management business An Affair to Remember. She lives in Wichita.

Robert A. Leftwich ’73, BUS ADM, president and CEO of First National Bank in Wellington, Kan., serves on the Kansas Bankers Association Board of Directors. He resides in Wellington.

Frank R. Webb ’73, BUS ADM, ’75 M ECON, Medicaid data analyst for the State of Kansas, was honored with the Outstanding Dedication Award by the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved. He resides in Topeka, Kan.

Winston C. Brooks ’74, EL ED, ’77 M EL ED, ’80 SP EAS, serves as president of the Kansas Association of School Administrators. The superintendent of Wichita public schools, Brooks lives in Wichita.

Melissa A. Cohlmia ’74, SEC ED, communications director for Koch Industries, is vice chairwoman of the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. She resides in Wichita.*

William “Bill” L. Kelley ’74, PE, is principal of Goddard, Kan., High School. He lives in Wichita.

Roel P. Quintanilla ’74, SEC ED, ’76 M EAS, former principal of Wichita North High School, is principal of J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City, Kan. He lives in Kansas City, Mo.

Patricia “Patsy” J. (Barker) Selby ’74, ENG L/LIT, ’80 ACCT, is treasurer of the National Conference for Community and Justice of Kansas for 2006-07. Selby is vice president of finance for the WSU Foundation. She lives in Wichita.*

Mark B. West ’74, ACCT, is the regional associate director of inspections for the Denver office of the federal Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. He resides in Wichita.*

Randall “Randy” A. Bane ’75, PSYCH, is director of Forgotten Heroes, a Wichita-based nonprofit organization that offers education and support programs for veterans and their families. Forgotten Heroes assists veterans in finding area service providers and also hosts a local television show on KSCW, Channel 5, and KTQW, Channel 49, that provides information about issues of interest. Bane lives in Wichita.*

Steven “Steve” D. Carr ’75, ACCT, president and chairman of Community Bank of Wichita, opened the bank’s first branch in Haysville, Kan. Carr resides in Wichita.*

Daryl W. Thornton ’75, BUS ADM, is COO of the Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kan. He lives in Augusta, Kan.

Virginia (Arredondo) Sumaya ’76, EL ED, ’77 M EAS, came out of an 18-year retirement from teaching to teach first grade at Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Dodge City, Kan., where she lives.

Richard “Rick” C. Robinson ’77, M BUS ADM, co-owns Café on Broadway in downtown Siloam Springs, Ark., where he resides.

Marcia A. Solomon ’77, SOC WK, a social worker with the Mid-Kansas Jewish Federation, is chairperson of the board for the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. She resides in Wichita.*

John P. Buselt ’78, BUS ADM, ’03 M PUB H, of Via Christi Health System, is vice president of the Kansas Self-Insurers Association board. He resides in Wichita.*

Jack O. Coleman ’78, M MUS ED, is the vocal and instrumental music teacher for the middle and high schools in the Peabody-Burns, Kan., school district. He lives in Mulvane, Kan.

Terry L. (Sell) Johnson ’78, SPEECH, an account executive with KWCH-TV, Channel 12, played Dorothy Parker in Music Theatre of Wichita’s 2006 production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. She resides in Wichita.*

Cynthia A. (Hess) Geist ’79, ED, is an English teacher at Scott City, Kan., High School. She resides in Scott City.

Peggy S. (Gough) Loyd ’79, ACCT, is vice president of customer care for Westar Energy Inc. in Topeka, Kan. She resides in Lawrence, Kan.

Julie-Ellen (Stallard) Acosta ’80, EL E, ’84 M EL E, Boeing Co. vice president of leadership development, is responsible for the Boeing Leadership Center in St. Louis, Mo., where she resides.*

Frank C. Bergquist ’80, GEN ST, is CEO of the Disabled American Veterans Thrift Stores in Wichita, where he resides.

James R. “J.R.” Hurst ’80, SP/THEA, a director, actor and author, co-wrote and directed the theatrical production Putting the Pieces Together: Kansas Families Facing Health Care Decisions, which was sponsored by Kansas Health Ethics and presented as a free performance at Mosley Street Melodrama in Wichita, where he lives.

Elizabeth “Liz” (Rieger) McGinness ’80, EL ED, ’82 M SPG, ’84 SP CSP, assistant director for special education for Wichita public schools, is a member of the district’s crisis team, which responds to traumatic events that occur in school or to students or employees. She lives in Wichita.

Terri S. (Richter) Moses ’80, AJ, ’90 M AJ, deputy chief of the Wichita Police Department, serves as the 2006-07 vice chair of the National Conference for Community and Justice of Kansas. She lives in Wichita.*

Vicki J. Neises ’80, ART GD, is a graphic designer for CS&S Graphics in Wichita, where she lives.

Jean A. (Lambke) Sleichter ’80, ACCT, is manager of the accounting firm of Gutschenritter & Johnson in Wichita, where she lives.

Karla A. Burns ’81, SP/THEA, ’81 MUS ED, starred as the voice of Audrey II in the Great Plains Theater production of Little Shop of Horrors in Abilene, Kan. “Normally I am able to be seen as I sing,” Burns told an Abilene reporter. “This time it was about bringing the character to life without being seen — with only my voice!” The award-winning performer lives in Wichita.

Charlene A. (Schawe) Laramore ’81, EL ED, ’93 M EAS, the former principal of Swaney (Derby, Kan.) Elementary, is assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the public school system in Derby, where she lives.* 

Craig A. Rhodes fs ’81, a partner with WDM Architects, designed the Sedgwick County Zoo’s Cargill Learning Center, one of the first buildings in Wichita to incorporate “green features” such as recycled materials and a design that improves  energy efficiency. Rhodes lives in Wichita.

Victoria R. (Westerman) Audley ’82, M NURS, is assistant professor of nursing at Newman University in Wichita. She lives in Goddard, Kan.

Annette (Schofield) Graham ’82, GERON, director of the Sedgwick County Department on Aging and the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging, has been appointed by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to the Interagency Council on Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation. She lives in Wichita.*

Leah A. (Peterson) Kasten ’82, GEO, a former petroleum geologist, teaches biotechnical engineering, astronomy and forensic science at Northeast Magnet School in Wichita, where she lives.

Dennis D. Leierer ’82, IE, a graduate student at WSU, placed first in the Region V Donald W. Fogarty International Student Paper Competition. Leierer is a senior manufacturing engineer at Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, where he resides.

Dana E. Walden ’82, SOC, ’85 M SOC, is the human resources manager, safety director and assistant to the city administrator for Park City, Kan. She resides in Wichita.

Roberta M. (Halbleib) Williams ’82, NURS, who has retired as lieutenant colonel from the 184th Air Refueling Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard, is an RN in neonatal intensive care at Wesley Medical Center. She lives in Derby, Kan.

Kim M. Yearout ’82, PT, is director of outpatient services for the Via Christi Rehabilitation Center in Wichita, where she resides.

Carolyn K. (Peters) McGinn ’83, MKT, Kansas state senator, serves as president of the Kansas African American Museum in Wichita. She lives in Sedgwick, Kan.*

Susan M. (Barkman) Smith ’83, PSYCH, ’90 M SCI ADM, is 2006-07 secretary of the National Conference for Community and Justice of Kansas. She is vice president of Gossen Livingston Associates Inc. and resides in Wichita.

J. Kay (Neal) Buskirk ’84, MUS P, ’85 MUS ED, ’93 M MUS P, an adjunct music faculty member at Bethel College in Newton, Kan., directs the Northeast Area Strings Academy of Wichita. Last summer, the academy’s string orchestra recorded Wichita composer Miriam Overholt’s work “Home to Nicodemus,” which was inspired by the historic efforts of former slaves who in 1877 founded the town of Nicodemus, Kan. Proceeds from the sale of the CD benefit the Nicodemus Historical Society. Buskirk lives in Wichita.

Janice S. (Hellstern) Franklin ’84, GEN ST, is senior operations specialist at Meritage Portfolio Management Inc. in Overland Park, Kan. She lives in Shawnee Mission, Kan.

Bob R. Bumgarner ’85, PERS ADM, the former executive pastor at Arlington Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and pastor of Amanda Baptist Chapel in Middletown, Ohio, is director of the Church Development Division for the Florida Baptist Convention. He lives in Jacksonville.

Curtis L. Whitten ’85, AJ, a criminal investigator for Sedgwick County Public Defenders since 1996, is treasurer on the board of the Kansas African American Museum in Wichita, where he lives.

Rodney “Rod” K. Brenneman ’86, FIN, president and CEO of Seaboard Foods in Shawnee Mission, Kan., is 2006-07 treasurer of the American Meat Institute. He lives in Overland Park, Kan.

John H. Purvis ’86, SP EAS, is principal of Rose Hill High School in Rose Hill, Kan. He lives in Derby, Kan.

Lynn Tatlock ’86, PSYCH, chairs the Community Council on Homeless Advocacy, an organization formed to address chronic homelessness in Sedgwick County. Tatlock is the director of the Salvation Army Emergency Lodge in Wichita, where she resides.

Lisa L. Hittle ’87, MUS ED, ’91 M MUS P, was honored by the Wichita Arts Council as an exceptional arts educator. She is director of jazz studies at Friends University and lives in Wichita.

Randall L. Hodgkinson ’87, AA N SCI/MATH, ’89 COMP SCI, ’89 MATH, is a visiting assistant professor at the Washburn University School of Law. He previously served as a deputy appellate defender with the Kansas Appellate Defender’s office. He lives in Topeka, Kan.

Mark E. Hutton fs ’87 is president of Hutton Construction Corp., which was named by the Wichita Business Journal as a Division II Best Place to Work for 2006. He resides in Wichita.

Don E. Weaver ’87, BUS ADM, is vice president of finance for Hesston College in Hesston, Kan., where he resides.

Deborah J. Hamm ’88, EL ED, ’97 M EAS, ’03 PHD ED ADM, is superintendent of Oxford, Kan., public schools. Formerly an assistant professor of curriculum instruction at WSU, she resides in Oxford.*

Garold L. Syring ’88, M SCI ED, teaches physics, chemistry and physical science at Washington County High School. He lives in Washington, Kan.

Kenneth A. Wells fs ’88 is CEO of Key Construction, which was chosen by the Wichita Business Journal as a Division II Best Place to Work for 2006. Wells resides in Wichita.

Pamela J. Barrett ’89, HC ADM, ’93 M PE, is the director of wellness and personal training at the East Branch ymca in Wichita, where she lives.

Thomas “Tom” E. Borrego ’89, AJ, is vice president for institutional advancement at Newman University, Wichita. He resides in Wichita.

Steven “Steve” R. Brunk fs ’89, Kansas state epresentative for the 85th District, has been recognized by the National Federation of Independent Business with the Guardian of Small Business Award for his advocacy on behalf of  business owners. He lives in Bel Aire, Kan.

Joel T. Hudson ’89, SEC ED, ’97 M EAS, is principal at Northeast Magnet High School in Wichita, where he resides.

Connie K. Leger ’89, GEN ST, is a naturalist at the Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita. She lives in Derby, Kan.

Gail M. (Revell) Billman ’90, CDS, ’92 M CDS, is a speech-language pathologist with the LCMC Rehabilitation Services Department in Parsons, Kan. She lives in rural Altamont, Kan.

Michael D. Harvey ’90, M EAS, who has 30 years of experience as an educator, is superintendent of USD 351 in St. John, Kan. He resides in Macksville, Kan.

Ron B. Jones ’90, M SEC ED, director of human resources for the Wichita public school district, is a member of Visioneering Wichita’s Racial Diversity, Opportunity and Harmony Strategic Alliance task team. He resides in Wichita.

Chris R. Lette ’90, COMP SCI, the mayor of Udall, Kan., owns Wichita Aerospace Spares Inc. and Project Manufacturing Corp., both based in Wichita. He resides in Udall.

Cassandra “Cassi” E. (McNelly) Rose ’90, EL ED, is a middle and high school special education teacher at Skyline School in Pratt,  Kan., where she lives.

Linda S. (Frickey) Starkey ’90, M COMM, assistant professor of music at WSU, was honored by the Wichita Arts Council for years of contribution to opera and musical theater. She lives in Wichita.

Wendy A. Williamson ’90, M H SCI, is second runner-up in the American Council on Exercise 2006 Personal Trainer of the Year competition. She is a senior personal trainer at Genesis Health Club in Wichita, where she resides.

Merresa L. Akers ’91, BUS ADM, is the human resource officer at Midland National Bank in Newton, Kan., where she resides.

Elizabeth “Beth” A. (Issinghoff) Brackeen ’91, EL ED, is a second grade teacher at Cottonwood Elementary School in Andover, Kan. She resides in Derby, Kan.

Crista L. (Kouba) Burnett ’91, SEC ED, ’02 M HIST, was one of 50 teachers in the nation chosen to attend a Cold War conference in Independence, Mo. She is a social science teacher at Kapaun Mount Carmel High School in Wichita, where she resides.

Frank L. Carson ’91, BUS ADM, chairman, president and CEO of Mulvane State Bank, serves on the Kansas Bankers Association Board of Directors. He lives in Mulvane, Kan.

Stanley K. Evans ’91, ACCT, of Woolsey Petroleum Management Co., is president of the Petroleum Accountants Society of Kansas. He resides in Clearwater, Kan.

Sheryl “Sheri” E. Francis ’91, NURS, ’95 M NURS, is a nurse paraprofessional at Anthony Elementary School in Anthony, Kan., where she resides.

Darcy A. (Ketter) Bluma ’92, HC ADM, is the director of admissions for Hospice Care of Kansas. She resides in Wichita.*

Shawn R. Ehrstein ’92, EL E, ’96 M EL E, ’00 M BUS ADM, is director of the CAD/CAM laboratory at the National Institute for Aviation Research at WSU. He resides in Valley Center, Kan.

Brian W. Hinkle ’92, M S ART/P, is the gallery director at the Wichita Center for the Arts. He lives in Wichita.

Theresa E. (Miller) Irsik ’92, EL ED, is a first grade teacher at Ingalls Grade School in Ingalls, Kan., where she resides.

Todd R. Kasitz ’92, M BUS ADM, is the CFO of Preferred Health Systems, which was chosen as the No. 1 place to work in 2006 by the Wichita Business Journal. Kasitz lives in Wichita.

Amy R. (Long) Siple ’92, NURS, ’99 M NURS, is assistant professor of nursing and curriculum coordinator at Tabor College Wichita. She resides in Wichita.

Matthew W. “Spike” Anderson ’93, COMM, ’95  M SP ADM, organized a Texas Hold ’Em poker tournament for the Valley Center Fall Festival. Proceeds were donated to the Valley Center Community Scholarship Fund, which he benefited from as a WSU student. Anderson works as a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Wichita and lives in Valley Center, Kan.

Heather R. Boyce-Broddle ’93, ART GD, is a visual arts/graphic design instructor at Newman University. She lives in Wichita.

Susan C. Cadman ’93, GEN ST, is an account manager for radio station 100.5 BOB FM. She resides in Wichita.

Dawn M. Johnson ’93, SEC ED, ’01 M EAS, a former English teacher, is principal at Little River Junior/Senior High School in Little River, Kan. She resides in Hutchinson, Kan.

Lisa A. (Stephenson) May ’93, BIO, is a radiologist with the Wichita Radiological Group and resides in Wichita.

Rodney “Rod” S. Sprague ’93, EL ED, is principal at Mound Valley, Kan., Grade School. He lives in Parsons, Kan.

Mark H. Yoder ’93, M PE, is commissioner of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. He oversees competition schedules, officials and marketing for the 10-school conference, which includes Bethel College and Friends University. He resides in Wichita.

Sandra F. Allala ’94, SOC WK, is a bilingual counselor at the Newton, Kan., office of FirstStep Counseling. She lives in Wichita.

Bradley F. Crisp ’94, AJ, ’98 M CJ, a Wichita Fire Department arson investigator, is also the trainer of Jodi, a 5-year-old black Labrador retriever assigned to the WFD Investigation Unit. Crisp resides in Whitewater, Kan.

Joel D. Elsea ’94, GEN ST, has sold his trash disposal company, Air Capital Disposal Inc., and now oversees the day-to-day operations of Greenlee & Elsea Association Management LLC, which provides a range of services to homeowner associations. He resides in Wichita.

Jeanelle C. (Morgan) Herrel ’94, EL ED, formerly with the Christian Family Counseling Division at Wisconsin Lutheran Child and Family Services, is assistant professor of family studies at Tabor College. She lives in Hillsboro, Kan.

Bart A. Moore ’94, GEN ST, is assistant police chief for the Mount Hope, Kan., police department. He resides in Maize, Kan.

Lawrence “Larry” M. Perlman ’94, M EAS, is the principal of Irving Elementary School in Wichita, where he lives. The Wichita Business Journal selected Irving as one of the Best Places to Work in 2006.

Roger W. Grier ’95, SEC ED, ’01 M CI, is a Rose Hill, Kan., High School science teacher after working for 20 years in the oil and aerospace defense industries. He resides in Douglass, Kan.

Heather L. (Martin) Holcomb ’95, SOC WK, a licensed clinical social worker, is a partner in the mental health practice of Behavioral Medicine Specialists in Wichita. She resides in Derby, Kan.

Pamela (Brewer) Speth ’95, PSYCH, is a counselor at the Goddard, Kan., office of FirstStep Counseling. She resides in Wichita.

Jamie R. Bell ’96, GEN ST, is director of the Logan County Development Corp. in Oakley, Kan., where he resides.

He created MyAthletePlace.com, a social networking website for student athletes, their families, coaches and scouts. Blue resides in Wichita.
