Warren J. Cortner '46, econ, a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot in World War II who also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, has retired from a 55-year career in investment business, Municipal and Corporate Securities. He lives in Wichita.*

Reba M. (Shank) Smothermon '55, el ed, a retired teacher, serves on the Kansas Travel and Tourism Board, which works along with the Kansas Department of Commerce to develop tourism programs. She lives in Liberal, Kan.*

C. Gordon McCarty '57, chem, '59 m chem, has been re-elected to the board of directors for the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. He begins his second three-year term as director-at-large this January. McCarty, an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina, Beaufort, since 2000, retired from the Bayer Corp. in 1999 after working for 12 years as manager of the company's university relations program. He resides in Saint Helena Island, S.C.

Bill Gardner '59, admn, owner of Gardner Design, Wichita, has developed a website, logolounge.com, that allows designers to research some 7,000 company logos. He lives in Wichita.

Henry H. Hall '61, speech, an ordained elder with the Wisconsin Conference United Methodist Church, is working to establish a clown ministry. He lives in Oconomowoc, Wis.

Frank R. Johnson '61, mus ed, '67 m inst, a retired band director, resides in Winfield, Kan.

Majorie A. (Presnal) Walton '61, mus ed, a retired Re-Max Realty real estate agent, lives in Wichita.

Frederick L. Haag '62, pol s, a compensation attorney for Foulston Siefkin llp, is listed as one of the best lawyers in America in the 2002-03 edition of the legal referral guide, "The Best Lawyers In America." Haag lives in Wichita.

David A. "Dave" Stallworth fs '65, Wichita State basketball great, conducted a youth basketball clinic along with Goose Doughty at the St. Mark Church of God in Christ this fall in Wichita. "I see these kids just running over with talent," Stallworth told The Wichita Eagle. "You like to see that talent develop. And it simply won't without a good understanding of the fundamentals." He lives in Wichita.

Donald R. "Don" Estes '66, el ed, a retired twa pilot, is president of Sleep Improvement Centers in Stony Brook, N.Y., where he lives.

Jon R. Cortner '68, econ, former Kansas Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve fighter pilot, has retired from a 34-year career as a commercial airline pilot. Cortner lives in Wexford, Pa.

Armand L. Hillier '68, m pe, former Augusta, Kan., high school athletic director, has been honored by the Kansas Coaches Association for service to the association and to the youth of Kansas. Hillier, who completed 40 years of service in public education in 2002, worked as an athletics director for 31 years. He resides in Augusta.

Joseph S. "Joe" Utterback '68, mus p, '69 m mus a, is a jazz pianist, composer and recording artist in New York City. He lives in Rowayton, Ct.

Ronald D. Weddle '68, aeroe, is director of manufacturing technical services for Cessna Aircraft Co. He resides in Wichita.*

Roger W. Zellers '68, admn, '69 m admn, is senior vice president of private wealth management for Intrust Bank, Wichita. Zellers resides in Valley Center, Kan.*

Orin N. Friesen '69, sp, who began his radio career in 1966 with a folk music show at WSU, has been named Western Disc Jockey of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists. A disc jockey for kfdi in Wichita, Friesen resides in Benton, Kan.

Stanley J. Herd fs '69, a self-employed artist known for his large-scale field artworks, is artist-in-residence for 2002-03 at the Sedan Gallery in Lawrence, Kan., where he lives.

J. Stuart Mack '69, chem, has been promoted to technical director of aerospace and military for Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings. He lives in Andover, Kan.

Janet A. Selby '69, fren, is a special projects librarian at Radford University in Radford, Va., where she lives.*

Willis E. "Wink" Hartman '70, admn, president of Hartman Oil Co. in Wichita, has quadrupled the size of the business since purchasing the company from his father in 1990. He hopes to double the size yet again by the end of 2003. Hartman Oil was founded in 1927 by his grandfather. Hartman lives in Wichita.

Bonnie Bing Honeyman '70, pe, '76 m pe, has been awarded the Knight Ridder Excellence Award for Community Service in recognition of her volunteer work, especially with children in need. Honeyman, a columnist for The Wichita Eagle, resides in Wichita.*

Otto L. Maynard '70, aeroe, has been appointed to the Workforce Network of Kansas Board, which serves as the state's workforce investment entity and brings together experts to work on key employment and workforce training issues. Maynard, president and ceo of Wolf Creek Nuclear Operation Corp., lives in Burlington, Kan.*

Richard J. Bowman '71, admn, '99 m bus a, is owner of Mechanical Concepts in Wichita, where he resides.

E. Eugene Clark '71, comm, is a law professor and pro-vice chancellor of external relations at the University of Canberra in Australia. He lives in Tasmania, Australia.

Gaylon W. Green '72, admn, has been named business manager for McPherson College. He lives in Hutchinson, Kan.

Steven A. "Steve" Scott '72, m art s, a visual artist, showed his new artworks in a fall exhibition, "Prairie Castles," at the Small World Art Gallery in Lindsborg, Kan., where Scott lives.

Susan W. (Willett) Smith '72, math, is an accountant for Texas State Credit in Waco, Texas. She lives in Lorena, Texas.

Marianne T. (Stein) Wancura '73, dh, a registered dental hygienist, saw her business, Salida Dental Hygiene pc, named business of the month last July by the Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce in Salida, Colo., where she lives.

John P. Crist '74, el ed, '78 m ead, is principal of Northwood Elementary School in Northwood, N.H. He lives in Portsmouth, N.H.

Laura M. Livingston '74, eng lit, '74 speech, is the artistic director for Freestyle Repertory Theatre in New York City. Livingston lives in New York, N.Y.

David A. Payne '74, acct, has been promoted to senior manager for Hill, Taylor llc, Certified Public Accountants. He also has been elected to the board of directors for the Chicago Tennis Umpires Association. He lives in Chicago, Ill.*

Neal J. Pfeiffer '74, chem, '77 m mch e, '80 phd engr, a 20-year veteran at Raytheon Aircraft Co., Wichita, who was involved in the development of the Starship and Premier I, manages the company's recently established advanced design/business capture group within its engineering division. Pfeiffer resides in Wichita.

Richard A. Stewart '74, acct, was named the 2002 Outstanding Alumnus at Independence Community College in Independence, Kan. Stewart, who graduated cum laude from WSU, is executive vice president of SAP Global Consulting. He lives in Castle Rock, Colo.*

Kenneth W. Anderson '75, ee, a retired principal electrical engineer, lives in Valley Center, Kan.

Kimberly A. "Kim" Hall '75, el ed, '83 m isep, a first-grade teacher at Nelson Elementary School in Haysville, Kan., has been awarded the Sam's Club West Teacher of the Year Award. Hall lives in Wichita.

Paul C. Herr '75, acct, '84 m bus a, was recently elected as president-elect of the Kiwanis Club of Wichita. Herr, a partner with the Wichita law firm of Klenda Mitchell Austerman & Zuercher llc, lives in Wichita.

Harry C. "Chuck" Perkins '75, acct, is vice president and general manager of Aero-Mach Labs Inc., Wichita. He resides in Wichita.

Roger M. Hubble '76, admn, '95 m bus a, has joined the Thayer Aerospace senior leadership team in the newly-created role of vice president of strategic sourcing. The company is based in Wichita, where Hubble lives.*

Michael W. "Mick" Pond '76, sp ead, is serving as interim superintendent of the Central school district in Burden, Kan. Pond lives in Sedan, Kan.

Michael "Mike" Sandstrum '76, acct, has been promoted to chief information officer with Moody-Price Inc. in Baton Rouge, La., where he lives.*

Gloria J. (Snyder) Summers '76, ger, '82 m bus a, has joined United Way of the Plains as a research associate. She lives in Wichita.

Steven L. Walts '76, ed, '89, m ed, the superintendent of schools for the Greece Central School District in Greece, N.Y., has received a doctorate from the University of Maryland. His dissertation study was "The Impact of the New York Learning Standards on Organizational Characteristics." He lives in Rochester, N.Y. *

Marguerite D. Crump '77, journ, '83 m pe, is the author of Don't Sweat It! Every Body's Answers To Questions You Don't Want To Ask, a work about puberty and hygiene geared to 9- to 13-year-olds. Crump, who teaches in Jefferson City, Mo., lives in Columbia, Mo.

Karen A. (Noll) Hasting '77, sec ed, '86 m sec ed, is a computer technology, economics and accounting teacher at Augusta Senior High School in Augusta, Kan. She resides in El Dorado, Kan.

Cynthia E. Rabinowitz '77, pe, is a physical education teacher at Enterprise Elementary School in Wichita, an assistant junior varsity boys soccer coach at Southeast High School, also in Wichita, and the regional secretary for the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association. She lives in Wichita.

Mark A. Torkelson '78, mus ed, '83 m inst, '91 sp ead, is an instrumental music instructor in Cherryvale, Kan., where he lives.

Robert S. Kenagy '79, admn, medical director for the Wichita Clinic, has been recertified as a diplomate with the American Board of Family Practice. He resides in Wichita.

David E. Yoder '79, pol s, former assistant county attorney, was elected as a mid-term replacement as Harvey County attorney. He resides in Newton, Kan.

Barbara L. Cress '80, nurs, '87, m nurs, was recently named dean of nursing and allied health at Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kan. She lives in Kingman, Kan.

Delores J. Beery-Norwood '80, mus p, a mezzo-soprano with credits from many well-known theaters and opera houses in Europe where she lived and performed for more than 15 years, is interim director of the School of Fine Arts at the First Baptist Church and an adjunct music instructor at Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn.

Kent E. Rogers '80, m ead, is assistant principal and athletic director at Rock Creek Junior/Senior High School in Manhattan, Kan., where he lives.

Timothy R. Shook '80, mus p, is an assistant professor of music at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan. He lives in Wichita.

Daylene F. (Brody) Walls '80, aj, who serves as assistant county attorney for juvenile matters in Montgomery County, Kan., has been chosen for the 2002-03 class of Leadership Independence, a program sponsored by the Independence Chamber of Commerce and designed to develop and motivate leadership talent in the community. Walls lives in rural Independence, Kan.

Craig A. Yaryan '80, admn, is vice president of Executive Mortgage Group in El Dorado, Kan. He resides in El Dorado.

Susayn C. (Peer) Brandes '81, admn, is president of Great Plains Ventures Inc., a holding company based in Wichita. She lives in Andover, Kan.

Joyce E. (Honeycutt) Ensor '81, el ed, '85 m el ed, is a fifth-grade teacher at Wineteer Elementary in Derby, Kan. She lives in Wichita.

Todd H. Duncan '81, econ, the regional vice president and director of the Bank of New York Western Trust Co., Los Angeles, Calif., is responsible for delivery of fiduciary financial services in the company's California/Western States region. He resides in Mission Viejo, Calif.

John J. "Joe" Kisner '81, econ, deputy district attorney for Sedgwick County, has been selected to serve on the board of directors for the National White Collar Crime Center. He lives in Wichita.*

Larry W. Pressgrove '81, mus ed voc, is serving as the music director of a national tour of the Broadway musical Les Misérables. He lives in New York, N.Y.

Thomas O. Sherow '81, sec ed, '91 m sci ed, teaches science at Derby High School in Derby, Kan. He lives in Maize, Kan.

Gregory D. Zielke '81, m mus ed, director of the music department at Grace University, has been named artistic director and conductor of the Omaha Symphonic Chorus, the official chorus of the Omaha Symphony. He lives in Omaha, Neb.

Melinda S. "Mindy" Cooper '82, aj, who is medically retired from her career in law enforcement with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in Colorado Springs, Colo., is active as a volunteer for a number of organizations, including Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership, the Fraternal Order of Police, the McKee Medical Center and Therapy Dogs of Northern Colorado. She lives in Fort Collins, Colo.

Nancy L. (Hanna) Davis '82, pa, '86 hs, is director of continuing medical education for the American Academy of Family Physicians in Leawood, Kan. She lives in Overland Park, Kan.*

Randall "Randy" Smithson '82, gen bus, '89 m pe, is men's basketball coach for Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan., where he lives.

Steven C. Wiesner '82, mkt, is the national sales manager for the sporting goods group of Spalding Sports, which includes Dudley Softball. He is in charge of a U.S. sales force of 33 sales representatives. Wiesner lives in Lenexa, Kan.

Sheryl L. (Miller) Wohlford '82, hca, an owner of Automation-Plus Inc. of Wichita, was one of five Wichita-area women honored at the Business-To-Business Showcase 2002, a Procurement Conference for Women Business Owners. Wohlford, who was recognized not only for her success in business but also for her support of other women-owned businesses, lives in Wichita.*

Cecilia L. (McBee) Green '84, journ, director of public relations for Turnaround Management Association, Chicago, has been presented a Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award by the Illinois Humanities Council, to celebrate "unsung humanities heroes" in Illinois. Green was nominated for the award by the mayor of Bartlett, Ill., for her advocacy of the arts and for organizing Bartlett's first arts council. She lives in Bartlett. *

Herbert J. Batrouny '85, acct, vice president and general manager of York Unitary Products Group's residential division, oversees 1,400 employees in Wichita and 400 in Apodaca, Mexico. He resides in Derby, Kan.

Kevin C. Hoppock '85, ns/mth, a family physician with the Wichita Clinic, has been elected to the board of trustees for Friends University. He resides in Valley Center, Kan.

Cheryl R. (Beard) Shaffer '85, acct, is regional director for Via Christi Medical Management in Wichita. She lives in Udall, Kan.*

Blaine K. Miller '86, hs, a former administrator for the Minneola District Hospital and a former regional vice president of operations for the Great Plains Health Alliance, has served as administrator for the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kan., since 1999. He resides in Belleville.

Scott B. Miller '86, mgt, is a national sales manager for Burke Corp., a leading producer and marketer of fully cooked meats for the restaurant and food service industry. Miller lives in Ames, Iowa.

Gordon T. McMillan '87, a aj, '87, aj, has received a graduate degree in aerospace administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. A. Darcelle Benson-Welker '89, nurs, an rn specializing in bone marrow transplants at the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Fla., has been selected to sing with The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. She lives in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Matthew D. Shepherd '89, psych, '99 comm/cl psych phd, a research professor with the Self-Help Network: Center for Community Support and Research at WSU, was presented the 1999 Todd E. Husted Memorial Award for best dissertation in mental health by the American Psychological Foundation and the 2002 Special Services Award by the Kansas Public Health Association for outstanding service in the interest of public health in Kansas. He resides in Wichita.

Jennie J. (Hernandez) Becker '90, art s, an artist, consultant and former career consultant coordinator for Wichita South High School, has been appointed to the Kansas Arts Commission, an organization that works to develop and coordinate arts within the state and also promotes Kansas art nationally. She lives in Wichita.

Denice B. Bruce '90, sp/comm, '93 m comm, is an instructor of speech at Hesston College, Hesston, Kan. She resides in Wichita.

David D. Depew '90, ns/mth, a design engineering manager with Cessna Aircraft Co., Wichita, has been elected to the board of trustees for Friends University. Depew lives in Wichita.
