Scores of Shocker hippies, hipsters and just plain folk convened at the Kansas Coliseum’s Pavilion II Oct. 4 for the 2003 Shocker Auction, WuStock.

Many of the more than 600 attendees got into the spirit of the event by sporting snazzy 1960s and ’70s threads. The event, chaired by Bryan Frye ’87/88, was an out-of-sight success, raking in $110,000 in support of alumni and student programs and scholarship opportunities at Wichita State.

“The Shocker Auction has a rich tradition of supporting higher education at Wichita State,” says WSU Alumni Association Executive Director Brad Beets ’87. “Auction-generated monies help fund association-sponsored scholarships as well as all kinds of programming for both students and alumni. Without the Shocker Auction, the alumni association would not be able to carry out its core mission of helping to establish connections between WSU and its students, alumni, faculty and staff.”

Emcee Mike Iuen opened the auction by introducing Charlie Evenson of Evenson Auctioneers Inc., who donated his auctioneering talents to the cause. The high purchaser of the night was Ron Ryan, who nabbed his choice of one of seven vehicles provided by Davis-Moore.

Other big items of the night included the use of Terradyne Country Club for a golf tournament, golf for four at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif., dinner for five cooked by Dr. Sam Cohlmia ’89 and hosted by President Don Beggs and First Lady Shirley (with flowers by J.R. Koontz), several vacations with lodging at luxury condos, fine jewelry and a special Shocker sports package that featured use of a private plane to fly to Omaha, Neb., to see the Shockers play basketball against Creighton March 1, 2004. Other big contributors included Royal Caribbean, Hillcrest Bank, The Olive Tree, Printing Inc. and KAKE-TV 10.

Among those attending were Terri Moses ’80/90, WSU Alumni Association president, and her husband, David, Gladys ’75 and Buck Alley, Sharon and Rob Allison, Trish ’96 and Ken ’91 Brasted, Kelley ’01 and Jeff ’88 DeGraffenreid, Dan ’59 and Linda Foley, Lee and Sheila K.
