WuShock and Wichita State men’s basketball head coach Gregg Marshall were the two Shocker centers of attention for Women United for the Shockers members who came together Sept. 23 in Charles Koch Arena’s Champions Club for heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and much convivial conversation.

Women United (WU) members share a simple goal: to provide a lasting endowment that will help fund WSU Alumni Association operations — and to have fun doing it.

Each WU member pledges $1,000 per year, for a minimum of five years. In return, they are invited to unique WU social events, with narry even one stuffy club meeting on the annual WU calendar of events.

Past group events have featured gatherings at the homes of founding WU members Kate Taylor, Martha Buford, Dana Fleming Mastio ’78 and Paula Alefs, as well as two seasonal Bracket Chatter outings to Deano’s Grill & Tapworks in March, when Mike Kennedy ’71, award-winning sports broadcaster and longtime “Voice of the Shockers” guided attendees in filling out NCAA men’s basketball tournament brackets.

To date, two WU members hold Bracket Chatter trophies in recognition of turning in the most complete brackets – thus proving themselves to be the best of the group’s hoops prognosticators: Suzanne Luginbill ’76 (2014) and Bonnie Bing Honeyman ’70/76 (2015).

This year’s night out with Coach Marshall easily made the list of “no stuffy meetings.” After one-on-one and small-group conversations, Marshall informally addressed the group, sharing a number of inside stories about Shocker basketball, past and future.

Women United members, in addition to Taylor, Buford, Mastio, Alefs, Luginbill and Honeyman, are Jan Aaron,
Julie-Ellen Acosta ’80/84, Rachel Allen ’01, Pamela Clancy Ammar ’80, Susie Anderson ’72/75, Donna Ard ’73, Mickey Armstrong ’45, Patsy Barton, Sharon Bastian ’76/76, Shirley Beggs, Joan Beren ’83, Nancy Blackman, Trish Brasted ’96, Kathy Burrus, Vicki Cady, Cindy Carnahan ’73, Gayla Carney, Janie Carney, Beverly Cash,
