Shockers everywhere, at events long ago to happenings just the other day, always have something interesting to say. Take this sampling as a Shock Talk example:
“I’m very excited. People get excited about going to the Final Four. We are excited because the Kennedy Center is our Final Four.”

Lyrics sung to the tune of the school’s Alma Mater by fine arts majors from the University of Wichita class of 1952 who attended the class’ 50-year reunion May 16-18.
“The mission of the college is still the same — we offer the visual arts, music, theater and dance. The challenge is how to maintain all of those. Because they are so related, the College of Fine Arts becomes much less if we detract from any of those disciplines.”
Walter Myers, who retired June 7 as dean of the College of Fine Arts nearly four decades after joining the university faculty as a trumpet instructor in 1963, as quoted in a May 26 article in The Wichita Eagle.
“Always swim with a buddy.”

During a round of spring cleaning at The Shocker’s offices in the Woodman Alumni Center, we came across a file labeled “Historical.” Inside, among other old photographs, we found this one. What we know: The photo was taken circa 1900. Its vantage looks south from Fairmount Hall, which was then the signature building of Fairmount College, the predecessor of the University of Wichita and Wichita State. Built in 1894, Fairmount Hall burned in 1929. At the time the photo was taken, the president of the college was Nathan J. Morrison, Fairmount’s first president, who served from 1895 until 1907, when Henry E. Thayer began his seven-year tenure as president.
