Making It Happen
Dorothy (Ingling) MacConkey ’53, Davis & Elkins College president emerita, was the first female chief executive for an institution of higher learning in West Virginia. “She was rather remarkable,” commented T. Richard Ross, Davis & Elkins dean emeritus. “I remember she would say, ‘Now, we’ve just got to make this happen.’ I admired her a great deal.” The 11th president of Davis & Elkins, Elkins, W. Va., she served from 1985 until her retirement in 1998.
MacConkey, who held a BA from Beaver College, an MA from WSU and a PhD from the University of Maryland, all in sociology, lectured in sociology at Wichita State before leaving in 1966 for George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. During her years at GMU, she chaired the department of sociology, was associate and acting dean of liberal arts and sciences, and assistant vice president for academic affairs. In 1982, she became vice president and dean at Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio.
MacConkey’s career also included work on legislation and program development in the areas of mental retardation, mental health and the physically disabled. She served on the federal task force for defining developmental disabilities for the U.S. Congress and was a research committee chair for the National Association for Retarded Citizens.

All That Jazz
James F. “Bud” Gould ’40 was a man of many talents. After his retirement from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., in 1982, he and his wife moved to Sedona. There, the instrumental music graduate and former Wichita State music teacher in the College of Fine Arts helped build a new home for his family, reorganized and briefly directed the Sedona Concert Band and indulged his passions for furniture-making, painting signs and cooking Italian food.
Gould was an accomplished and highly respected musician in both classical music and jazz. In 1940, he recorded with Charlie “Bird” Parker and the Jay McShann Orchestra playing jazz violin and trombone. The record itself wasn’t released until 1974, but it was worth the wait — the record won a Grammy.
During the summers of his youth, Gould played with Harry James, Tony Bennett, Don Rader’s “Big band Jazz” and 76+4 Trombones.
During the late 1980s, he expanded his roles in the music world by serving as an editorial adviser for Prentice Hall Inc. books on jazz and writing a variety of articles for the National Association of Jazz Educators Journal.
