Comings, goings, appointments, retirements, honors, accolades and other personal alumni news. Former students are designated by fs. Honorary alumni are noted as hn. Members of the Wichita State University Alumni Association are identified by an asterisk (*). Membership dues support alumni publications as well as the many other programs and services that support higher education at Wichita State. 

Joyce (Henkle) Boone ’50, HIST, ’74 M SOC, a retired teacher, was inducted into the Garden City (Kan.) High School Hall of Fame in May. She taught sociology and marriage and family classes for 26 years at Garden City Community College, where she became the first female division head in 1980 and where she began the program “Project: I Care,” a community service project that partnered students with troubled children on a friendship basis. Boone lives in Garden City.

Rudolph V. Kreutzer ’56, M MUS I, retired music director for the South Orange Maple public school system in N.J., was one of three guest conductors who directed the Hanover Park High School band during the school’s celebration this May of 50 years of excellence in school music. He lives in Toms River, N.J.

Sally C. (Shank) Luallen ’60, MUS ED, is operations manager of the Kansas Aviation Museum in Wichita, where she resides.*

Ronald R. Riley ’60, BIO, who in 2002 retired after nearly 40 years of practice in general dentistry and endodontics in Wichita, is pursuing a second career as a dental educator at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry. Among his academic and teaching honors is being named an instructor of the year. In 2006, he was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists and is to be inducted as a Fellow in the International College of Dentists in 2008. Riley resides in Kansas City, Mo.*

Louis R. Valadez ’60, EL ED, ’65 M PE, retired high school assistant principal, became the first minority head football coach in the Wichita public school district in 1967 when hired to coach at Wichita South High School. He remains the only coach to take South High to the state football playoffs. In addition, he coached wrestling, winning the state championship in 1975 and coaching 18 individual state wrestling champions during his career. Valadez lives in Bel Aire, Kan.

Richard L. Honeyman ’61, POL SCI, partner at the Wichita law firm of Hite, Fanning & Honeyman LLP, served as producer of the 2007 Kansas Bar Association Show, a satirical musical about political and governmental issues written and produced by bar members. “Wizards of Oz!” was staged in June at the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita. Honeyman resides in Wichita.*

Thomas H. Graber ’64, POL SCI, retired Sept. 30 after 31 years as district court judge for the 31st Judicial District. “I just plan to retire and hopefully spend more time with my grandchildren and horses,” Graber told the Wellington Daily News. “I look forward to more living in the country.” He resides in Belle Plaine, Kan.

Bryce J. Luty ’65, M MUS/I, performed with the McPherson (Kan.) High School Jazz Band in May. The trumpet player and retired Hutchinson Community College director of jazz studies is also a former mhs band director. He lives in Hutchinson, Kan.

Herbert “Herb” L. Krumsick ’66, BUS ADM, senior vice president of J.P. Weigand & Sons, Wichita, has received the Howell Watson Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. The national award, named for a Dallas commercial Realtor known for his work mentoring other agents, is a meritorious service award given only when a member is deemed deserving. Krumsick is the 10th winner since the award was first presented in 1986. He lives in Wichita.*

David L. Dewhirst ’67, BUS ADM, ’73 M BUS ADM, president of Sabris Corp., an aviation consulting and brokerage firm in Wichita, donated a motorglider to Kansas State University in Salina. After students restore the glider, it will be used in the school’s glider flight training program. Dewhirst resides in Wichita.

William “Bil” F. Tucker ’67, CHEM, ’69 M CHEM, is the deputy chief of party for the organization Instituting Water Demand Management in Jordan. He resides in Amman, Jordan.*

Carter J. Zerbe ’68, ACCT, has retired as publisher of the Augusta (Kan.) Daily Gazette. He serves on the advisory committee of WSU’s Elliott School of Communication, as a trustee for the William Allen White School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Kansas, as a board member for the publication Active Aging and on the board of trustees at Butler County (Kan.) Community College. He lives in Augusta, Kan.*

E. George Fahnestock ’69, BUS ADM, chairs the Kansas Technical College and Technical School Commission. The group studies the funding and mission of technical colleges and schools in the state. Fahnestock is the owner and ceo of Fahnestock Heating, Air Conditioning & Electric and Central Air Conditioning Co. in Wichita, where he lives.*

James “Jim” H. McFadden ’69, POL SCI, is director of the Mother Mary Anne Clinic, an urgent-care clinic at Via Christi-St. Joseph in Wichita. He resides in Andale, Kan.

Earl G. Yarbrough ’69, I ED, who earned his doctorate in industrial education from Iowa State University and his master’s degree from California State University at Los Angeles, has been selected as president of Savannah State University, a historically black university in Savannah, Ga. Previously a professor of industrial technology at Virginia State University, he served from 1998-2003 as chief academic and student affairs officer, managing some $75 million in state and federal funds, tuition and fees, research dollars, and grants and gifts awarded to the university. He also has administrative experience at two other universities, having served as the first dean of the technology school at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., and as chair of the industrial technology department at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Ark. Yarbrough lives in Savannah.*

Susan L. Allen ’70, ANTHRO, is director of non-violence education at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., where she also lives. 

Patricia A. (Cooper) Ingram ’70, EL ED, has retired after 26 years of teaching at Harper Elementary School in Harper, Kan. She lives in Anthony, Kan.

Larry E. Brocklesby ’71, PSYCH, ’77 M PSYCH, and his associates in the People Success Group in Arlington, Texas, offer organizational and individual coaching and consultation services dealing with skill or career transition, management style or business culture definition issues and many other “people processes.” He lives in Arlington.

Rodney K. Brown ’71, BUS ADM, ’73 M BUS ADM, former president and chief executive of Montecito Bank & Trust in Santa Barbara, Calif., is president and ceo of one of the nation’s largest banking trade groups, the California Bankers Association. Brown, who began his banking career as marketing director at the former East Side Bank and Trust in Wichita, lives in Santa Barbara.

Preston Carrington fs ’71, who placed fifth in the long jump at the 1972 Olympics with a leap of 26 feet-2 1/2 inches, was third in long jump at NCAA championships in 1970, placed sixth in 1971 and who also was a starting guard on the WSU basketball team from 1969-1971, is a 2007 inductee into the Topeka and Shawnee County (Kan.) Sports Hall of Fame. The 1979 Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame charter inductee lives in Glendale, Ariz.

Maurice L. “M.L.” Korphage ’71, GEO, ’74 M GEO, a former Kansas Corporation Commission staff member, has opened a Wichita office for Tulsa-based all Consulting. He is a senior geologist and regulatory specialist for the firm. Korphage lives in Wichita.*

Curtis “Curt” E. McNay ’71, I ED, ’85 BUS ADM, registered architect and president at Caber Associates Inc. Architects, served as architect and contractor for Wichita State’s West Campus. He lives in Wichita.*

Roger P. Carvalho ’73, ENG L/LIT, ’73 AM ST, ’77 M COMM, former senior advertising manager at Yellow Book USA (formerly Feist Publications), has launched his own agency, RPC Marketing, in Wichita, where he lives.*

Stanley G. Gegen ’73, ACCT, president of Coordinated Systems and Supplies LP in Wichita, serves on the board of High Touch, a business technology solutions provider. He resides in Colwich, Kan.

William “Bill” R. Glasco ’73, MATH, is a consulting actuary for The Cottonwood Group in Leawood, Kan. He lives in Independence, Mo.*

Ken W. Seaman ’73, BUS ADM, ’74 M BUS ADM, is president and general manager of Aerospace Systems & Components in Wichita, where he resides. Seaman’s company was named Wichita’s Small Business of the Year for 2007 by the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Mary J. (Oeser) Galvin ’74, AA RT, ’85 RT, ’90  M H SCI, former vice president of Gossen Livingston Architecture, is executive director of Communities in Schools, a nonprofit organization that helps more than 8,000 students in 31 schools. She lives in Wichita.

Gerald D. Norwood ’74, REL, account manager for the Xerox Corp. and local historian, has authored “The History of Dunbar Elementary School: It was a Village that Raised these Children.” In May, he presented “In the Footsteps of Freedom: Tracing the Journeys of Freed Slaves” at WSU’s Ablah Library. He resides in Wichita.

Ronald “Ron” B. West ’74, SEC ED HIST, is a clinical solutions specialist at McKesson Provider Technologies in Sarasota, Fla., where he lives.*

Steven “Steve” M. Cowman ’75, ACCT, is chief financial officer at Morrill & Janes Bank, Overland Park, Kan. He lives in Paola, Kan.*

Dennis R. Daniels ’75, HIST, ’75, POL SCI, is deputy executive director of the National American Indian Housing Council in Washington, D.C. He was previously research director. He resides in Annandale, Va.*

Susan I. (Aaron) Moller ’75, ANTHRO, is a curriculum and training manager at the University of Washington in Seattle. She resides in Snohomish, Wash.*

David F. Schuster ’75, AJ, is an information technology administrator for Mckee, Marburger & Fagnant in Lander, Wyo., where he resides.

James P. McCullough ’76, CHEM, director of pathology at Providence Medical Center Laboratory in Kansas City, Kan., and Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan., has been appointed to the Providence Saint John Foundation’s board of directors. He resides in Stilwell, Kan.

Sidney L. Sondergard ’76, ENG L/LIT, ’81 M ENG, has been named to the endowed position of Craig Professor of English at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He is author of Sharpening Her Pen: Strategies of Rhetorical Violence by Early Modern English Women Writers, as well as essays on English and Scottish literature, semiotic theory and film and popular culture. Sondergard, who is working on an adapted screenplay and translations of works by a Chinese writer, lives in Madrid, N.Y.

J. Christopher “Chris” Moos ’77, HC ADM, ’82 M BUS ADM, finance, economics and international business instructor at Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, has received a 2006-07 Outstanding Teacher award. He lives in Joplin.

Lana W. Myers ’78, HIST, authored her first book, Newton Medical Center: Merging the Past with the Future, a history of the two original hospitals in Newton, Kan. She lives in Newton.*

Alan D. Banta ’79, GEO, executive vice president of Trans Pacific Oil Corp., Wichita, is also a musician, performing as frontman for the Fabulous Shirtheads, a sometimes raunchy music and comedy act he has been with for 25 years. In May, he sang with not only the original members of the Shirtheads, but also members of Storm, the band he played with at Southeast High School and at WSU. The concert was at Wichita’s Roadhouse Blues. Banta lives in Wichita.*

Michael A. Dorsey ’79, MED TECH, ’84 M BUS ADM, is president and CEO of Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan. He resides in Topeka, Kan.

Steven P. Savarese ’79, EAS, who left the coaching ranks as the winningest active football coach in Alabama, is executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association in Montgomery, Ala., where he lives.

James “Jim” L. Ziegler ’79, BUS ADM, former general manager at Bombardier Aerospace’s Wichita Learjet plant, is chief operating officer for North America at Jet Aviation. He lives in Wichita.*

David L. Jesmore ’80, AJ, a captain with the Kansas Department of Corrections, retired in 2006 as a supervisor at the Lansing Correctional Facility. He lives in Leavenworth, Kan.*

Joseph “Joe” Carter fs ’81, retired professional baseball player, was back in action during June’s Shocker Classic at Eck Stadium, where the former Shocker standout coached his own group of Shockers, a team of high school players from Johnson County who were participating in the annual baseball classic. He lives in Leawood, Kan.

David W. Daniels ’81, MCH E, is CEO at Wichita Burner Inc., a company that is conducting tests on a biomass burner. “We’re not testing to see if it works,” Daniels told the Wichita Eagle. “We are testing to determine the performance of different fuels.” Fuels so far tested include cow manure and wheat middlings. Daniels resides in Wichita.

Lowell A. May ’81, AJ, a retired U.S. Army command sergeant major, is co-author of Prisoners of War in Kansas, 1943 to 1946. His first book is Camp Concordia: German POW's in the Midwest. The retired court services officer lives in Riley, Kan.

Gregory “Greg” S. Remington ’81, M PE, sports information director at the University of New Mexico, has been recognized with a 25-year award presented by College Sports Information Directors of America. He lives in Albuquerque, N.M.

Jane K. (Wiles) Bennington ’82, M ED PSYCH, a social studies teacher at St. John (Kan.) High School, was Grand Marshal of the 2007 St. John Jubilee. She lives in St. John.

Leslie R. Chaffin ’82, JOURN, is corporate director of marketing for Presbyterian Manors Mid-America in Wichita. She resides in Mulvane, Kan.*

Joseph “Joe” A. Cipriani Jr. ’82, M PSYCH, professor of occupational therapy at College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa., has been presented the Louis and Barbara Alesi Excellence in Scholarship Award for his academic accomplishments. He resides in West Wyoming, Pa.

Karla J. (Evers) Degner ’82, EL ED, is serving as president of the 2007-08 Kansas Medical Society Alliance, a volunteer organization that represents physician spouses and promotes health-care issues and medical fundraising. She resides in Hutchinson, Kan.

Bonnie L. Johnson ’82, M BUS ADM, ’94, M AEROS E, ’04, CI, a math teacher at Valley Center (Kan.) High School and a private pilot, competed in the 31st annual Air Race Classic. This year, the 2,400-mile all-women transcontinental race began in Oklahoma City and ended in Saint John, New Brunswick. Johnson, who lives in Valley Center, and her flying partner, Carol Foy, finished the air race in 20th place.*

Frances “Fran” M. Lee ’82, M ED PSYCH, a retired educator, received the 2007 Democratic Women Humanitarian Award from the National Federation of Democratic Women for her contributions to the community and politics. Perhaps best known in Wichita as “Miss Fran,” the teacher on “Romper Room,” the locally produced show on KAKE-TV from 1967 to 1979, Lee taught elementary school and worked as a program specialist and consultant for the State Board of Education. She lives in Topeka, Kan.

Bruce McCandless ’82, M URB A, is assistant city administrator for the city of Billings, Mont., where he resides.

Tammy K. (Daley) Walston ’83, POL SCI, is a contract attorney who supports the global real estate and facilities division and the telecommunications procurement group at Exxon Mobil Global Services in Houston. She lives in Spring, Texas.*

Michael A. Keller ’84, AJ, ’87 M AJ, became the chief of police in May for the Andover (Kan.) Police Department. Keller, who has 21 years of experience with the Wichita Police Department, resides in Andover.

Rebecca S. (Wilson) Johnson ’85, NURS, is director of nursing at the Council Grove Health Care Center in Council Grove, Kan., where she lives.

Rae A. Niles ’85, EL ED, ’06 PHD ED, curriculum director for Sedgwick, Kan., public schools, placed third in the Wichita State University Graduate Research and Special Projects Competition for her research on the impact of laptop computers on teaching and learning. She competed against 127 other researchers. She lives in Sedgwick.*

Carolyn S. Russell ’85, GEN ST, president of Russell Public Relations in Wichita, founded the marketing and public relations firm 10 years ago after many years in corporate communications with Boeing, Beechcraft and Brite Voice Systems. She lives in Wichita.*

Rick E. Weiss ’85, M EAS, ’88 SP EAS, is superintendent for the Wellington, Kan., public school district. He resides in Wellington.

William “Bill” J. Wissing ’85, IE, vice president of distribution for Blockbuster Inc., is a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and of the International Recording Media Association. He resides in Dallas.

Steven T. Witherspoon ’85, MKT, ’90 SEC ED, and his wife, Tonya L. Witherspoon ’02, GEN ST, ’04 M CI, have opened MindScapes Academy, a computer-training company in Wichita, where they live.

Beverley J. Buller ’86, M SEC ED, library media specialist at Chisholm Middle School in Newton, Kan., is the author of From Emporia: The Story of William Allen White, a biography for children. She resides in Newton, Kan.

Thomas “Tom” L. Dennis ’86, M S ART/P, is an associate professor of art at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He lives in Kearney.

Carl A. Eliason ’86, M MUS P, is the director of youth ministry at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island, Neb., where he lives.

Eric J. “Rick” Heimerman ’86, FIN, vice president at Dealers Leasing Inc., Wichita, is responsible for credit, administration and equipment leasing. He resides in Garden Plain, Kan.*

M. Todd Johnson ’86, BUS, is general manager of sports radio 1410 KGSO, a part of Steckline Communications. He resides in Wichita.*

Timothy W. Nohr ’86, M BUS ADM, is associate general counsel for Rackroom Shoes in Huntersville, N.C., where he resides.*

Roxy R. Schlatter ’86, PE, former owner and manager of Club Fitness in Independence, Kan., has earned a Ph.D. in counselor education from the University of Arkansas and is a therapist in the adolescent day treatment unit at Perspectives Behavior Health Management in Fort Smith, Ark. She lives in Greenwood, Ark.

Stanley “Stan” J. Schaefer ’87, AEROS E, who works at the Johnson Space Center as chief of the systems division in the Mission Operations Directorate, has been selected to NASA’s Senior Executive Service. He leads the team of space shuttle and International Space Station flight controllers who work in the Mission Control Center. Schaefer lives in Friendswood, Texas.*

Sharon L. (Duncan) Hillwig ’88, M EAS, ’95 SP EAS, has retired from the Derby, Kan., public school district after serving as principal at El Paso Elementary School for 18 years. She lives in Derby.

Debra “Debbi” J. Allison ’89, FIN, was featured in a Wichita Eagle article highlighting women working in male-dominated fields such as commercial lending and real estate. She works as Intrust Bank’s sole female commercial real estate lending officer. She lives in Wichita.

William “Bill” H. Anderson ’89, PE, ’98, M EAS, former assistant principal at Nickerson (Kan.) High School, is principal of Sterling (Kan.) High School and Junior High School. He lives in Sterling.

Tyrone “Ty” T. Tabing ’89, ECON, executive director of the Chicago Loop Alliance, a group of merchants, real estate companies and nonprofits, came up with the idea of “Looptopia,” an all-night event that showcases the Loop’s theater district, colleges and cultural offerings, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Harold Washington Library and the Gene Siskel Film Center. Tabing lives in Chicago.

Michael S. McClelland ’89, SP, R/TV, ’93 M COMM, is a bankcard officer in the bankcard marketing department of Intrust Bank. He lives  in Wichita.

James “Jim” A. Roman ’89, MKT, is senior vice president and private banking relationship manager at Commerce Trust Co. in Wichita. He resides in Andover, Kan.*

LaMonte R. Rothrock ’89, M CSP, is dean of students at McPherson College. He resides in McPherson, Kan.

Tanza L. (Taylor) Bauer ’90, M BUS ADM, is associate director of the Executive mba Program at Wichita State. She resides in Wichita.

Timothy “Tim” L. Cunningham ’90, HIST, is executive director of Tri-Valley Developmental Services Inc. in Chanute, Kan. A 13-year veteran in the social service field, he lives in Chanute.*

Carol L. (Brooks) Hadorn ’90, M EAS, has retired after 33 years in education as principal at Eisenhower Elementary School in Wellington, Kan., where she also resides.

Janet M. (Huschka) Hanson ’90, NURS, ’95 M NURS, is the school nurse with Salina, Kan., public schools. She lives in Salina.*

Robert R. Rugan ’90, BUS ADM, ’93 M BUS ADM, is vice president for agricultural and commercial lending at American State Bank and Trust Co. in Great Bend, Kan., where he also resides.

Cynthia C. (Hearlson) Highbarger ’91, ACCT, is CFO for Mid-Continent Instruments in Wichita. She lives in Towanda, Kan.

Clinton D. Fiechtl ’92, MCH E, is senior associate with Professional Engineering Consultants in Wichita. He lives in Derby, Kan.

Constance “Connie” F. Foehrweiser ’92, EL ED, ’05, M SP ED, is a teacher at the Children’s Resource Center in Thermopolis, Wyo. The center is a non-profit agency providing special education and related services for children under the age of five. She lives in Thermopolis.*

Derek L. Keller ’92, MGT, ’93 M BUS ADM, is a financial consultant with AXA Advisors llc in Wichita, where he resides.*

Gordon D. Kuntz ’92, M NURS, who works at the High Plains Mental Health Center in Hays, Kan., also serves in the Kansas Army National Guard. Col. Kuntz, who has more than 31 years of military service, commands the Kansas Area Medical Detachment. He lives in Hays.

Joseph “Joe” G. Moore ’92, MATH, is a software architect at lSI Corp. in Wichita, where he lives.*

Richard “Rick” D. Mulkey ’92, M ENG CR, former WSU creative writing program director, has had his fourth book of poetry, Toward Any Darkness, published by Word Press. He is an associate professor of English and the director of the creative writing program at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., where he lives.

Anthonio “Tony” M. Johnson ’93, AJ, a former WSU basketball player, has invented a tool that combines measuring, marking and cutting material. The device is called the Sabrr Mark & Cut, and his company is Toolworxx. He resides in Wichita.

Adam D. Knapp ’93, JOURN, an award-winning 10-year veteran reporter with the Wichita Eagle, is now a writer for the Wichita Business Journal. He lives in Wichita.

Toby L. Lane ’93, MATH ED, former assistant basketball coach at Southeast Missouri State, is associate director of basketball operations for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He resides in Miami, Fla.

John W. Marker ’93, RT, ’95 H SCI, ’03 M NURS/BUS ADM, is associate chief nursing officer at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he lives.

Regina L. (Rice) Peszat ’93, FREN, a graduate teaching assistant in the University of Kansas’ department of French and Italian, has been recognized for her contributions to graduate education with the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. She lives in Lawrence, Kan.

Sheli L. (Nordstedt) Glover ’94, PSYCH, is the central intake coordinator for United Methodist Youthville, a contractor that takes in and places kids in foster care once police and the state take a child into custody. She often acts as an emergency foster parent. She lives in Valley Center, Kan.

Margaret R. (Atkins) Goger ’94, SOC WK, a psychotherapist and certified sex therapist, has been chosen by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists as the representative for Kansas members of the organization. She resides in Wichita.

Vivek Lall ’95, PHD AEROS E, is vice president of business development for Boeing’s Integrated Defense System in India.

Nikki J. (Lasater) Schoenhals ’95, GEN ST, is a community outreach representative at Wichita Lifeline Inc. She resides in Haven, Kan.

Mildred A. (Patterson) Edwards ’96, HC ADM, ’99 M PUB H, project director of Wichita’s Stand Together Coalition, which promotes community involvement to prevent substance abuse and its consequences, serves as president of the Wichita Junior League. She is the first African-American to fill this position in the 82-year history of the organization. Edwards lives in Wichita.

Tyson C. Langhofer ’96, I BUS, is an attorney and partner with Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP. A Wichita resident, he focuses on the formation of businesses, general corporate matters, probate, commercial litigation and tax-free exchanges.

Thonenaty “Teal” T. Palivan ’96, AJ, who came to Wichita in 1977 with his family as a refugee from Laos, is a detective in the Wichita Police Department’s exploited and missing children’s unit. He resides in Derby, Kan.

Carolyn G. (Stines) Payne ’96, GERON, ’96 HSOP, is a practice administrator at Wichita Nephrology Group PA. She lives in Rose Hill, Kan.*

Lynn S. (Jones) Price ’96, M PT, is marketing manager for NovaCare, which recently took over three HealthSouth clinics in Wichita. She resides in Derby, Kan.

Kevin A. Bobo ’97, MUS P, a nationally and internationally acclaimed soloist, recitalist, clinician and orchestral percussionist, is an associate professor of music percussion at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Ind.

Fatima E. (Weaver) Crump ’97, M SPAN, is the show chairman for the Wichita Kennel Club Inc. She lives in Valley Center, Kan.

Angela S. (Leggett) Gaughan ’97, M COMM, previously with the WSU Cooperative Education Office, is operations specialist for the Self-Help Network at Wichita State, where she oversees the front office staff, coordinates printing requests for the staff of 40 and assists with office databases. She resides in Bel Aire, Kan.
