Spears, Men's golf dominate

Ryan Spears

Ryan Spears is the lone senior on a tough-to-beat men's golf team.

The Shockers have won three of four tournaments this fall, and Spears has won two individual titles. He looks to complete his Shocker career as one of the most successful players in the program's history.

Having won four tournaments, including a Missouri Valley Championship in 2006, he currently leads the MVC in scoring average at 70.4.

Spears attributes the team’s success to confidence. “When you know you can win if you play well, it makes it easier, and we know that now,” he says.

Golfweek Magazine named the Shockers a team of the week in September, and they haven’t looked back. Their spring season tees off on Feb. 17, 2008, in San Antonio at the Roadrunner Classic. Spears and the Shockers will look to bring home a  seventh MVC Championship in April, with hopes of moving on to regional and national play in May.

Mica Land readily admits that the steeplechase, a 3,000-meter obstacle course that includes barriers to hurdle and water jumps to splash through, is "kind of a funny race."
