WSU’s accomplishments in the javelin might be one of the best-kept secrets on campus, and the reason behind the success seems obvious: Shocker throws coach John Hetzendorf.
Hetzendorf has been at WSU since 2000 and has guided some of WSU’s top athletes, including Allison Berry, a four-time MVC champion in the javelin. Certainly, Hetzendorf has a résumé that demands respect from his athletes. He was a two-time All-American in the javelin at Kent State, reached the Olympic trials in 2004 and took fourth at the USA Track and Field championships in the summer of 2007 with a throw of 243-8.
“The reason I came here is because I knew about his reputation,” says Shocker senior Kyle Becker. “When you have an Olympic-caliber coach, it definitely draws in some of the better athletes.” Hetzendorf, in turn, credits the dedication and determination of his athletes for WSU’s success.
About his coaching philosophy, he says, “I think we have what I call an all-encompassing approach. We try to focus on the overall athlete. We want them to get stronger and faster, and that, of course, makes them better javelin throwers.
“And I think it helps, too, to have so many great athletes in that event. They kind of feed off each other, and there’s some friendly competition.”

Welcome, Coach Adams
There’s a new Shocker on the hardwood. Jody Adams, who posted a winning record at Murray State University, has taken over the helm of WSU’s women’s basketball program.
Adams had a 24-8 record at Murray State and took the team to the NCAA tournament for the first time. A member of the Tennessee team that won the 1991 national championship, she also has coached at Southern Illinois, Missouri-Kansas City, Minnesota, Wake Forest and Auburn. She replaces Jane Albright, who now coaches at the University of Nevada.
