Changes for the Better

BY CONNIE WHITE

Jerry FlorenceAccomplished executive Jerry Florence '71, is hard at work making life better for elder Americans.

Since accepting two roles with the AARP in 2004 as associate executive director for membership and director of the AARP Foundation, AARP’s charitable arm, Florence oversees one of the nation’s largest philanthropic organizations — and an operating budget of $130 million.

That budget, explains Toula Stamatiou of the AARP Foundation, funds 10 national programs that “help senior citizens age with dignity and respect and a litigation team that battles issues facing older Americans such as age discrimination in the workplace and elder fraud. Under Jerry’s leadership, programs such as Tax-Aide and Senior Community Service Employment Program are effecting positive social change by enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens.” Prior to assuming his dual positions, Florence was director of AARP Member Value.

AARP is benefiting from Florence’s more than 25 years of general management, technical, brand marketing, strategic planning, sales and international management experience in automotive and high-tech growth industries. Among the companies he has worked for are e-MedNet Inc., Sempra Energy, Nissan Motor Co., General Motors’ Cadillac Division and General Electric’s Silicones Division.
