Shocker Basketball Preview
Men's Basketball Coach Randy Smithson '86/89 is excited about the upcoming season. He'll be sharing that excitement with area alumni during a series of informal dinners, tipping off in Hutchinson Sept. 15 at the Ramada Inn, and followed by events in Winfield, Sept. 22 (1998) at the Country Club, and Newton, Spet. 28 at the Old Mill.

Black-n-Yellow Bash
Wed., Sept. 2 (1998); 7-9 p.m. — Connect with fellow alumni and university friends at this annual Kansas City Chapter event at the NCAA Visitors Center and Hall of Champions, 6201 College Blvd., Overland Park, Kan. Featured guests include Shocker Basketball Coach Randy Smithson '86/89 and Alumni Association Executive Director Brad Beets '87. Don't pass on this event — it's the very last time alumni will have the opportunity to visit the NCAA center in Overland Park.
Premiere Scholarship
The Kansas City Alumni Chapter, headed by President Hall Miller '71, will be awarding the chapter's premiere scholarship this fall to a deserving student who hails from the Kansas City area.

MPA Gathering

Philanthropic Polo
Shocker Hellraisers and other Wichita State alumni joined in the fast-paced excitement of polo competition July 23 at the Fairfield Polo field. Proceeds from the event benefited the Cerebral Palsy Foundation of Kansas. Alumni participants included Larry Arbuckle '66, Jack Shelton '63, Bill Walsh '71, Mary Grene '97, Wink Hartman '70, Dan Carney '53 and Thomas Fankhauser '70. Those watching from the sidelines included Max '57 and Lois '56 Hubbard, Cliff and Donna Simmons, Tony and Brenda '67 Schwab and Rick Dreiling '86.
Shocker Football Reunion
Fri.-Sat., Sept. 18-19 (1998) — All Shocker team members who played in the Raisin Bowl and Camellia Bowl are invited to return to campus for a Shocker Football Renion. Among festivities is a players-only reception in the locker room at Cessna Stadium on Sept. 18 and an everyone-welcome dinner at Traditions Cafe in honor of the bowl players on Sept. 19. Shocker Spirit Reunion
Fri.-Sun., Oct. 16-18 (1998) — Practice your moves and plan to join other WSU Spirit Group members and mascots for a Shocker Spirit Reunion. Weekend activities will include a Friday evening reception, a Saturday practice session with the current Spirit Squad and Dance Team, a luncheon in honor of the many contributions spirit groups and mascots have made to the university, a tent party for the whole family and a first glimpse of the new men's and women's basketball teams Saturday night. A Sunday brunch will cap off festivities. Swinging into Action
Shocker Golf Tournament volunteer organizers Don Glenn '75 and George Fahnestock '69, co-chairs, Curt Lagree '59/64, John and Sher '72 Hurst, Mike Allen '70, Paul Corn '71, Ed Kuhn '72, Dan Foley '59 and Lee Thompson '68 are revving up the fun-quotient for the 1998 tournament slated for Fri., Sept. 18 at WSU's Braeburn Golf Club.
"We're going to have a great time on the course," Fahnestock says. "So go ahead and enter your foursome today for the best-ball scramble."
Tournament action tees off with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., preceded by registration and lunch at noon. After competition, golfers and guests will catch their breaths at a reception in Braeburn's club house and then enjoy dinner, door prizes and awards at Traditions Cafe, 4201 E. 21st Street.
The $70 entry fee for Alumni Association members and $100 fee for nonmembers, with the additional $30 used for an annual membership, includes pre-tournament driving range admission, lunch, green fees, cart and on-course drinks, post-tournament reception, dinner, entry gifts, plus chances for winning skill prizes as well as for taking home finishing prizes for first, second and third in three flights.
"Not only are we going to have fun," Fahnestock adds, "but proceeds from the tournament are going to benefit a fun project — refinishing the Alumni Association's basement Shocker memorabilia room. Many alumni and university groups already use this space for meetings and other get-togethers. We're looking forward to making this all-purpose room even more user friendly and full of Shocker spirit."
Welcomefest
Aug. 26 (1998); 11 a.m.-2 p.m. — To welcome students back to campus, alumni will give away rootbeer floats in the RSC courtyard.
