Vivian R. (Shane) Alexander ’38/71, retired Wichita public schools eighth-grade math teacher, former social worker who served in the home services department of the American Red Cross, July 30, 2012, Wichita.

Thomas P. Allen Jr. ’50, retired director of the Wichita Board of Park Commissioners who joined the park system staff in 1961 as a recreation supervisor and was named director in 1975; active member of the board for the Wichita River Festival who chaired numerous events, was Admiral Windwagon Smith VII in 1980 and served as general chairman of the festival in 1981; former superintendent of recreation for the North Jeffco Metropolitan Recreation District, Arvada, Colo.; U.S. Marine Corps veteran; former high school science and physical education teacher and head football coach at Moundridge, Kan.; and a former Shocker football player, July 8, 2012, Sequim, Wash. Allen joined the Shocker football team as a freshman from Montgomery, Ala., in 1946. The four-year letterman was noted for a pass he caught on Oct. 29, 1949, in a game against the University of Tulsa. He snagged an end zone pass in the final seconds of the game to give the Shockers a 27-21 victory over the Golden Hurricane. It was the first-ever Shocker win over the Oklahoma rival.

Penny P. (Payne) Berryman ’72, homemaker and accomplished sportswoman who competed nationally as a water skier in the Nationals Water Skiing Championship and as a fisherman in numerous professional tournaments, the 1997 Bass N’ Gals Angler of the Year, a 2004 inductee into the Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame, Sept. 30, 2012, Hot Springs, Ark.

William R. Blake Jr. ’56, retired federal administrator who last served as director of financial management for Medicare-Medicaid reimbursements for four Midwestern states, Nov. 12, 2012, Manhattan, Kan. A WU history graduate, Blake was recognized for being a sports “superfan,” as a 1986 Kansas City Star article describes him. The article goes on to report that while on a business trip, he once attended seven basketball games in six days, and on one of his and his son’s getaway sports jaunts, the duo traveled 1,608.08 miles to watch two baseball games and three football games in 3.5 days. “Sports, to me,” Blake was quoted as explaining, “is history, geography, the great heritage of America I get to touch going to all these places. It’s the great people you meet, coaches, players, ticket takers, fans, 99 percent of whom you’ll never see again, but you’re richer for having met them.”

William F. Bowman ’56, retired businessman who worked at Associated Co. Inc. in Wichita for 35 years, serving as president of the company for 18 years, Nov. 4, 2012, Edinburg, Texas.

Irene (Box) Crews ’43, retired farmer who, in 1984, became the first woman to run for county commissioner in Sumner County, Kan.; community service activist who was a past president of the Kansas Federation of Women’s Club, the first woman to be elected chair of the board for KPTS Channel 8 in Wichita and a member of the Argonia Library Association; former life insurance agent and stockbroker, Sept. 13, 2012, Argonia, Kan. Crews, who lived in Sumner County most of her life, was the sole owner, operator and manager of her family’s farm. While campaigning for the Republican nomination for county commissioner of the third and fourth wards of Sumner County, Crews was quoted as saying, “All my life I have worked for the betterment of my community. I don’t intend to set the world on fire. I don’t have any ulterior motives. It’s just time that women took a more active part in a manner of which their world is run.”

Morton C. Cuplin ’51, musician, private music teacher and director; retired high school music teacher and music administrator for Bartlesville, Okla., public schools; former band, choir and orchestra teacher at several Kansas schools; veteran of the U.S. Army who served from 1953-55 and was post bugler at Ft. Donald D. Donley ’71, farmer, Sept. 12, 2012, Winfield, Kan.

Donald M. Douglas, associate professor emeritus of history at Wichita State, WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corps, former Missouri Pacific Railroad employee, past member of the U.S. Holocaust Commission and a 1985 appointee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to its Kansas State Advisory Committee, Jan. 15, 2013, Wichita. Douglas, who joined WSU’s faculty in 1965, taught modern European history, focusing on German history, for 35 years. His rigorous courses on Hitler, the Third Reich and on the Holocaust were key offerings for both undergraduate and graduate history students. His professional interest in the Holocaust made him a driving force behind the annual Wichita Holocaust commemorations, and he made important contributions to Holocaust history through his research efforts. Among his scholarly works is Survivors in the Heartland, based on recordings of his extensive interviews with Holocaust survivors who made their way to Kansas. A board member of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and a member of the Kansas History Teachers Association, Douglas was the recipient of numerous awards, including the WSU Honors Program Mentor’s Award, the Mid-Kansas Jewish Federation Special Award for unwavering commitment to Holocaust education and the Eisenhower Liberation Award for exceptional achievement in the field of human rights.

Robert W. Carl G. Goeller Jr. ’51, retired greeting card authority who wrote more than 20,000 greetings, authored several books on communication and worked as managing editor at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Mo., as editor in chief at Rust Craft Greeting Cards in Boston, Mass., and as editorial director and corporate officer at American Greeting Cards in Cleveland, Ohio; owner/creator of Glass Cartoons by The Glass People Inc., Elyria, Ohio, Dec. 28, 2012, Wichita. As a student at WU, Goeller drew cartoons for the student newspaper the Sunflower. After retiring from the greeting-card industry in 1983, he took up cartooning again, this time in glass. “When I developed the little stained-glass characters, I made them different from other glass items on the market by adding touches of humor,” he explained in a 1984 WSU Alumni Report interview. “It seemed logical to call them ‘glass cartoons,’ thus fulfilling my old urge to be a cartoonist.” He sold more than 150,000 Glass Cartoons, including a commissioned piece for a Barney Miller character for actor Hal Linden.

Charles A. Goodrum ’47, retired director at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., where he first worked as librarian of its Congressional Research Service, then as director of CRS research and finally as the library’s director of the office of planning development; author of eight books, including Treasures of the Library of Congress and I’ll Trade You an Elk, a series of reminiscenses about growing up in Wichita in the 1930s and ‘40s when his father was the director of the fledgling city zoo, Sept. 21, 2012, Springfield, Va.

Edward E. Haught ’56, economics graduate who worked for Phillips Petroleum in Kansas City, Kan., Bartlesville, Okla., and Houston for more than 35 years before taking a position with PetroSource Corp. in Houston, where he retired in 1993, Jan. 25, 2013, Woodcreek, Texas.

Heatley ’79, long-time practicing CPA in the Kansas City-area who was active in various civic and philanthropic organizations, including the Spofford Home, a provider of preventative and therapeutic residential treatment to at-risk children and their families, Sept. 14, 2012, Shawnee, Kan.

Heryford ’80, a 32-year veteran of the Kansas State Highway Patrol, for which he served as a member of the Honor Guard, the Governor’s Detail, the Motor Vehicle Inspection Division and the Troop G Turnpike Patrol; former officer with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms; volunteer firefighter and EMT, Aug. 3, 2012, Topeka, Kan.

John “Jack” J. Hunt ’76, truant officer for the Ansonia Board of Education in Ansonia, Conn.; Ansonia High School golf coach and freshman basketball coach; retired AHS track and girls softball coach and legendary Ansonia Chargers football coach who was head coach from 1987 to 2005, retiring with an overall record of 193-26 and seven state championships in 11 title games; football letterman at Wichita State, Nov. 22, 2012, Ansonia. Hunt, a native of Ansonia who stood 6-feet-7-inches tall and weighed 275 pounds, was recruited to play for WSU, where he was coached by Bill Parcells ’64 and Jimmy Johnson, two future NFL coaching legends then assistants on WSU’s coaching staff. An injury to Hunt in 1970 may have saved him from being aboard the chartered plane that crashed on Oct. 2, 1970 in the Colorado Rockies, killing 31.

Timothy J. Hurley ’65, retired advertising executive whose career included positions as creative director and partner at Quillen-Elsea-Hurley Advertising, executive vice president at the Wichita Area Builders Association, account manager and city manager at Pennypower Shopping News, manager of marketing communications at Mycro-Tek and as director of advertising at Brite Voice Systems, all in Wichita, Oct. 17, 2012, Wichita.

L.C. “Jick” Jackson Jr. ’40, retired owner and president of L.C. Jackson Inc., a Wichita-based wholesale furniture firm whose display floors were once featured in a 1961 issue of House Beautiful magazine; past president of both the Associated Furniture Distributors of America and the National Wholesale Furniture Association; active university supporter and alumni association member who, among his many contributions, served on the Shocker Auction party committee and as chairman of the University of Wichita’s Class of 1940 50-year reunion; WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army for five years, Dec. 15, 2012, Wichita.

C. Brian Kirby ’48, WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-46, geologist and consultant who worked at Sunray Oil Co. and Bay Petroleum, both based in Wichita, the Tenneco Oil Co., Durango, Colo., and the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Co., Holbrook, Ariz., before completing his professional career as hydrologist with the state of Arizona from 1972-89, Jan. 30, Glendale, Ariz.

Bill J. Krehbiel ’71, retired teacher and coach whose career included teaching physical education and drivers education and coaching football, basketball and track at several Kansas high schools, including Halstead High; former PE instructor at Wichita State; former head football coach at Tabor College in Hillboro, Kan.; and WWII and Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, and retired as a major, July 23, 2012, Halstead, Kan.

Kathleen “Kathy” Lewis, former physical therapist and physical therapy teacher at Colby Community College in Colby, Kan., who earned a juris doctorate from the University of Washburn School of Law in Topeka, Kan., and continued her career in education focusing on law for physical therapists and serving as associate professor and chair of the physical therapy department at WSU, retiring in 2008, March 11, 2013, Peoria, Ill.
