Peter L. Youngers ’58, ART/P, ’64 M ART/P, received the President’s Award during Northeastern Junior College Alumni Association’s annual awards luncheon earlier this year. Hired as an art instructor at the Sterling, Colo., college in 1965, he retired in 2001, but has continued to serve as an adjunct instructor. Youngers, for whom the Peter L. Youngers Fine Arts Gallery on campus is named, resides in Sterling.*

Robert M. Smith ’67, SPEECH ED, is serving as interim chancellor at the University of Tennessee at Martin. President emeritus of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and former dean of UT Martin’s School of Arts and Sciences from 1987 to 1999, Smith first went to Slippery Rock in 1999 as provost and vice president for academic affairs. He was named interim president in 2002 before becoming the university’s 15th president in 2004, retiring in 2012 and moving to Franklin, Tenn.*
Frank D. Thomas ’67, MUS ED, ’71 M MUS ED, has retired from conducting the St. Joseph (Mo.) Community Chorus. Thomas, who taught choral studies at Missouri Western State University for 38 years, resides in St. Joseph.
Marita Rother ’68, M EAS, has marked 60 years of vowed life with the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. A teacher for more than 40 years, she was director or assistant director of the department of elementary education at Kansas Newman, superintendent of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Dodge City, Kan., and associate superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. A volunteer at The Lord’s Diner in Wichita and the Wichita Center, she lives in Wichita.
Lee “Doc” E. Franklin ’69, BUS ADM, is president of the U.S. Highway 36 Association, an organization that promotes tourism and commerce along the highway that runs across Kansas and Colorado, with a tourist information center in Smith Center, Kan. He lives in Jennings, Kan.
Brenda M. Brumfield-Ross ’70, ED, ’72 M ED PSYCH, is a special education teacher at the Vallejo (Calif.) Regional Education Center. She lives in Vallejo.
Janet E. Snyder ’70, SPEECH, is the J. Bernard Schultz Endowed Professor in Art at West Virginia University’s School of Art and Design. The author of Early Gothic Column-Figure Sculpture in France: Appearance, Materials, and Significance, she lives in Morgantown, W.Va.
Don W. Osborn ’71, M ART/P, displayed some of his steel sculptures at Bethany College’s Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kan., from May 3 through July 19. His exhibit was titled “Fabricated Steel Sculpture, Patinas, and Metallics.” He lives in Roxbury, Kan.

Ruth A. David ’75, EL E, retired this past April from her position as president and CEO at Analytic Services Inc. (ANSER), a nonprofit that provides objective studies and analyses for issues concerning national and homeland security. David, who served as ANSER’s top leader for 16 years, is the 2003 WSU Alumni Achievement Award honoree and the 2014 WSU President’s Medal recipient. She resides in Alexandria, Va.
Ronald “Ron” L. Miller ’75, M AJ, was nominated last year by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Marshal for the District of Kansas. The U.S. Senate in March unanimously confirmed the nomination. Miller, who will serve a four-year term, resides in Basehor, Kan.*

L. Kent Needham ’76, M BUS ADM, has received the James C. Scarboro Award – which honors a commercial banker who has provided outstanding leadership to the banking community – from the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado. He is president and CEO of First Security Bank in Overbrook, Kan.*

Scott S. Brown ’92, ART/PR, ’04 M ART/PR, an artist and printmaker, was an artist-in-residence this past summer, along with his wife Michele, at the Red Barn Studio in Lindsborg, Kan. The couple produces limited edition works by Kansas artists at the Big Nasty Press, a small grass-roots business, and also operate a collaborative design studio, the Smithereen Studio. S. Khalid Raza ’92, M IE, returned to Wichita State’s campus in September to deliver a guest lecture hosted by the College of Engineering. The founder of Viptela, a Silicon Valley startup offering solutions to computer networking challenges, he holds patents in Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), and is the author of Large-Scale IP Network Solutions. He lives in Fremont, Calif.
Charles A. Baughman ’94, M ART/P, along with a number of his former art students, displayed artworks last spring in the CityArts exhibition “25 Years of Teaching,” which celebrated Baughman’s teaching career. Through the years, he has been an instructor at the Wichita Art Museum, Wichita State, Cowley College, Butler Community College, Wichita Center for the Arts and Friends University, but today focuses on teaching at Wichita’s Monart School of Art, which he owns with his wife, Kate Pepper. He lives in Wichita.
