Delta Upsilon Annual Stag
Bob Long ’64, front row center, returned to Wichita this past October as
speaker for the WSU Delta Upsilon chapter’s annual Fall Alumni Stag event.

Bob Long is Speaker at DU Annual Stag

A former Shocker student-athlete in basketball and football, Bob Long '64 had a successful career in pro football.

A wide receiver, he played for the Green Bay Packers with the teams that won the NFL title in 1965 and
the first two Super Bowls in 1966
and 1967.

He later played for the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Rams, before retiring
in 1970.

A summer issue of the WSU Delta Upsilon–Men of Webster Alumni Association newsletter reports, among other items of interest, that “Bob has been nicknamed ‘The Packer Storyteller’ for his unique perspectives playing for famed coach Vince Lombardi.”

And in his DU alumni board president’s message, Tony Durano ’85 notes that Long is sure to recount “his time as
a collegian DU, such as the historic DU vs. Beta ‘Battle of the Keg’ game in 1961 that he played in.” That is sure
to be a Shocker of a tale!

Sigma Phi Epsilon Chapter Wins Buchanan Award

Wichita State’s Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has won its national organization’s most sought-after award, the Buchanan Cup. This award, announced at the 2015 national convention, is presented every two years to only 30 of the 230-plus chapters in the nation.

Only chapters with members who represent themselves with consistent adherence to the principles that form the foundation of the fraternity and who are dutiful civil servants can attain such an accolade. Members of WSU’s Kansas Eta chapter more than met the criteria.

Among their philanthropic causes is Pennies for Wishes, for which they raised $7,700 earlier this year. They are also active in Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as with sexual assault prevention and awareness efforts that include coordinating with the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center. Other chapter service events and projects include Neighborhood Clean-Up, Wishes for Miracles 5k and Zach’s Wishes for Miracles.

Kudos to Gamma Phi Beta Chapter

Wichita State’s Gamma Phi Beta chapter, Beta Chi, received a letter of recognition from the Gamma Phi Beta International Foundation for its outstanding support of the organization’s international philanthropy, Girls on the Run. The chapter is among the top 10 fundraising chapters for Girls on the Run across the United States and Canada.

During the 2014-15 academic year, Beta Chi raised $11,900 for the local Sedgwick County Girls on the Run council. Girls on the Run is an international organization that strives to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that integrates running.

The curriculum is taught to 3rd through 5th grade girls over a 10-12 week period, at the end of which participants run a 5K. Beta Chi hosts a Crescent Classic Gamma Phive-K in the fall semester in support of Girls on the Run. In addition, many of its members volunteer to work the 5K hosted by the Girls on the Run in both the spring and fall.

“We are so happy and proud to support such an amazing organization,” says Clare Stewart, Beta Chi president.

Tri Delts Win Makeover

Wichita State’s Delta Delta Delta Phi Xi chapter earned the most votes in a national public tally and edged out the runner-up University of Oregon to win the 2015 Dorm Decor Contest.

After learning of the win, WSU sorority sister Lyndsey Edwards posted an Instagram photo with this comment: “That moment when you win a $10,000 house makeover and don’t know what to do with yourself!”
