Drive for Success

women's basketball team
Jody Adams — at center, standing — enters her eighth season as head coach
at Wichita State. She is WSU’s all-time winningest women’s basketball coach,
looking for more success this season.

Wichita State tipped off its 2015-16 season with an exhibition game win over Central Oklahoma, 68-61, on Nov. 8 in Koch Arena, but lost its season opener on the road
to Creighton, 54-79, on Nov. 13 and, on Nov. 18, fell to Missouri, 37-57.

The Shockers are coming off a highly successful season after winning their third-straight MVC regular-season and tournament titles, while also collecting a school-record 29 wins, a program-best 17 MVC victories and earning a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.

This season, three players return from last year’s roster: junior guard Jaleesa Chapel (2.8 points, 1.8 rebounds), who hails from Spring, Texas; junior center Brittany Martin (1.8 points, 2.3 rebounds) from Queensvillage, N.Y.; and sophomore guard Aundra Stovall of Arlington, Texas.

Seven newcomers, including Jyar Francis, who was named the first MVC Newcomer of the Week for the week of Nov. 16 and four transfers, have joined the 2015-16 team.

The four transfers are junior guard TaQuandra Mike (South Georgia Technical College, who averaged 17.2 points and earned NJCAA All-America Honorable Mention status last season); junior guard Marija Pacar (6.8 points and 3.4 rebounds at Tallahassee Community College in 2014-15); sophomore guard Diamond Lockhart (4.3 points and 1.4 rebounds at Texas Tech in 2013-14); and freshman forward Rangie Bessard (2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds at Minnesota in 2014-15).

No Regrets

Willie Jeffries was honored for his “coaching legacy” by South Carolina State’s athletics department, in conjunction with the SC State Former Athletes Association, during a special weekend of events held Oct. 16-17 in Orangeburg, S.C. When Wichita State hired Jeffries in 1979 from SC State, he entered the sports history books as the first African American head football coach at a Division 1A university.

And We're Off ...

The Shockers opened the season ranked No. 10 nationally. Sports Illustrated’s David Gardner and Luke Winn, among others, proclaimed Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker the best backcourt in the NCAA. All of which puts pressure on Wichita State to perform.
