Shockers Win Five Matches on Final Day of Sooner Invitational
Wichita State finished the last day of the three-day Sooner Invitational tennis tournament Sept. 18 on the campus of the University Oklahoma with four Shockers picking up singles wins and Valerie Brockman and Delia Damaschin earning a doubles win.
“Overall, it was a good weekend,” WSU head coach Colin Foster said. “Now we’ve got a few weeks to get better and stronger before the Missouri Valley Conference Individuals October 7 through 9 in Cedar Falls.”

Shocker Volleyball Sets Winning Ways
The Shockers (8-4, overall) posted three straight wins at home with a three-set victory over Illinois State on Sept. 17.
They earlier dispatched Oklahoma (3-2) and Indiana State (3-0) in Koch Arena.
Shockers Win Fall Doubleheader
The WSU softball team picked up two wins in the Sept. 17 doubleheader against Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilkins Stadium.
The Shockers won the first game 5-1 and the second 5-2 in their first weekend of fall softball action. Sophomore Rachel Milnark led the Shockers at the plate with five hits and an RBI on the day. Sophomore Laura Vickers picked up two hits including a home run, two RBI and scored two runs. Katie Armagost and Sloan Anderson each picked up a win in the circle for the Shockers, and freshman Katherine Johnson picked up two saves on the day.
Upcoming fall games include Wichita State versus Cowley County, noon, Sat., Oct. 8; versus Western Nebraska, 4 p.m., Oct. 8; versus Butler County at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wed., Oct. 12 – all at Wilkins Stadium on campus.

Two New Shocker Kansas Sports Hall of Famers
Two Shocker standouts are among the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2011: pitcher Don Heinkel ’82 and football head coach Willie Jeffries, who will be inducted during ceremonies Oct. 2 in Wichita.
Opening Win
WSU’s Aliphine Tuliamuk won the university/college women’s 4k at the 63rd annual J.K. Gold Classic Sept. 3 in Augusta, Kan., as the Shocker cross country teams opened the 2011 season.
Tuliamuk, from Kapenguria, Kenya, paced the field of 121 women with a winning time of 13:40.10. She finished more than 10 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Martina Tresch from Kansas State. Former Shocker Tonya Nero, who broke the course record in 2010 as a senior, finished in third place running unattached. Current Shocker Patrober Murindat finished in fifth place with a time of 14:18.07, and WSU’s Samantha Shukla finished ninth overall.
On the men’s side, Marcos Bailon and Jackson Toroitich led the Shockers in the university/college men’s 6k, finishing seventh (19:21.15) and eighth (19:22.76), respectively. University of Missouri-Kansas City runner Cosmas Ayabei won, leading the 135-man field with a time of 19:08.44.
More than 480 university, college and high school runners participated in the J.K. Gold Classic’s six races.
