Sept. 17 Shocker Golf Tournament.

The 1999 Wichita State University Alumni Association Shocker Golf Tournament produced scores of winners — and no real losers.

With gifts, prizes, fun and near flawless golfing weather, none of the 120 participants in the annual golf tournament hosted by the Shocker Hellraisers walked away a loser.

And one lucky Shocker golfer, Wes Garton, even won the chance to take home a cool million dollars — if he could land a hole-in-one on the 18th hole at WSU's Braeburn Golf Course. The crowd quieted for his attempt, but his swing took the ball just shy and south of the hole.

Organized by Linwood Sexton '48, tournament chairman, Mike Allen '70, Paul Corn '71, Alan Cobb '88, Curt LaGree '59/64, Joe Verbeckmoes '76, Eldis Beets '56, Ed Kuhn '72 and Chris Shank '69, the Sept. 17 tournament raised money for alumni and university programs.

Corporate sponsors of the event were the House of Schwan, Hurst Liquor Store, ksas Fox 24, Pepsi-Cola and Pizza Hut. Some 21 other local businesses and individuals supported the tournament as hole sponsors.

Following tournament play, golfers were feted with both a reception on the patio of the Woodman Alumni Center and then an awards banquet at Traditions Café, where these Shockers were presented prizes for their skills on the greens:

Closest to Pins: #6, Craig Burns; #8, Cliff Jones; #13, Eric Sexton; #17, Troy Jordon; Straightest Drive on #10: Howard Nordyke; Men's Longest Drive: Justin Schmidt; Women's Longest Drive: Cathy Stevens.
