Boughton Bash

Music at WSU won't sound quite the same after the spring 2000 semester. Why's that? Harrison Boughton, long-time School of Music professor, will be leaving the university, retiring after 38 years of teaching and conducting choral groups.

While colleagues, students and former students are sad to see him go, plans for his retirement celebration are rapidly gaining momentum. Slated for May 5-7, 2000, the milestone event will feature a Saturday night mass-choir performance by past members of these Wichita State groups: A Cappella, University Singers and Madrigals. Participants will rehearse on Friday and Saturday afternoon before performing at the festivities Saturday night. Choir selections will be representative of the pieces used in conducting classes and Boughton favorites.

Other weekend highlights are a reception Friday evening and a brunch Saturday morning. In addition to the mass-choir performance Saturday night, festivities will showcase a "Boughton Roast" and a full concert with appearances by A Cappella and Madrigals as well as a number of past and present faculty.

Boughton himself is looking forward to the event and hopes as many of his former students as possible can attend. "We want to invite anyone who, in the last 38 years, sang in one of our groups, regardless of their major," Boughton says.

Those planning to attend the Boughton bash should notify organizers by sending name, address, phone number and e-mail address, as well as information on any other alumni who may be interested, to: Dr. Harrison Boughton/School of Music/Wichita State University/Wichita KS 67260-0053.
