Keep It Up

Dear Editor:

Now that (winter 2001/02 issue) is a good publication. Looks good, reads well, timely, interesting and germane.  Nice work. Now, the hard part. Keep it up.

Spectacular Photo

Dear Editor:

I received my copy of The Shocker (winter 2001/02 issue) today. The photo on the cover and page 21 is spectacular! However, I was unable to find a credit for the photo. I recognize the hand and crown of the Statue of Liberty. What was the location of the camera? Who took the photo? I would appreciate more info about the photo.

Great issue! I enjoy the magazine very much.

Ms. White:

What a moving picture of the WTC! I searched all over the WSU site for a copy of it.  Would it be possible to put it up for “wallpaper” use?  If not, where can I get a copy of it?

Sincerely,

David Fretz ’64, Shrewsbury, Vt.

Dear Ms. White:

I just received the winter 2001/02 issue of The Shocker.  What a great publication! I am curious about the picture on pages 20 and 21. Is this a real photograph or has it been altered?

Thank you,

Jeanne Evans, El Dorado, Kan.

World Trade Center

Editor’s Note: This photo illustration began as a photograph (shown at left) purchased from gettyone.com, an online resource for stock photography. The juxtaposition of Lady Liberty’s torch and the twin towers of the World Trade Center gave us a frame of reference we were unable to find elsewhere. The stark, compressed reality of two of New York’s most prominent landmarks offered a pensive reflection on what had become symbols of liberty. We focused on the top of the torch and the towers themselves. Isolating these images in a field of blue sky seemed to express the singular, epic loss in simple, uncluttered terms. We debated the journalistic integrity of the visual decision, concluding that the image lent powerful, quiet impact to the point we wanted to make. Unfortunately, the image is not available for public use.
