Music Man

Wynne Harrell Veteran music educator Wynne J. Harrell ’56/59 has been named a Lowell Mason Fellow by the Music Educators National Conference.

Named after the founder of American music education, the Lowell Mason Fellowship is one of the highest awards menc: The National Association for Music Education bestows upon individuals who’ve made significant contributions as music educators.

MENC’s mission is to ensure accessibility to a quality music education for all.

“The creation, by the Missouri Music Educators Association, of the Harrell Music Scholarships — two $500 awards given annually to freshman music education majors — is very gratifying,” says Harrell, who has served on the National Assembly of MENC for more than 30 years. In addition, he has been executive secretary for MMEA since 1986 and was president from 1974-76.

Harrell, who completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education at WSU and his doctorate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, has taught at public schools in Kansas and Missouri and is now retired from Missouri State University.
