Shock Talk

Crowson Cartoon

Shockers everywhere, at events long ago or happenings just the other day, always have something interesting to say. Take this sampling as a Shock Talk example:

“We don’t just have a plan — we have a damned good plan.”
— David McDonald, graduate school dean and associate provost for research at Wichita State, commenting on a request to the state for a $31 million, five-year grant to create a Center of Innovation for Biomaterials in Orthopaedic Research. A decision on the grant should be made in early 2009.

“Barack Obama is certainly an unusual candidate. He beat the powerful Clinton machine, which was quite an achievement, and he has been very effective as a public speaker. On the other side, John McCain is smarter than people give him credit for and is a genuine hero who survived more than most people would. What I think is unique is that both sides have been making such blatant allegations about each other, and the media, so far, has been letting them get away with it.”
— WSU political science professor Melvin Kahn mulling this year's presidential campaign. Kahn adds that he lives for the presidential election season, whereas his wife “can’t wait until it’s over.”

“Playing it safe will not cause any intellectual or personal growth.”
— Zach Gearhart, Student Government Association president, during WSU’s Convocation ceremony Aug. 26 at Charles Koch Arena.

"I believe in luck, just because I never had any."
— Robert Buckner ’17, as quoted in the 1917 Parnassus.
