Welcome to the Jungle
Every page of WSU’s Fall 2008 Survival Guide, “Welcome to the Jungle,” offers info, facts and ads useful to the Shocker student experience. Surrounding the centerfold campus map, for instance, are articles on co-op programs, affordable health options, campus safety and the new student government administration team of Zach Gearhart and Chevis Rebstock. And on Page 24, you’ll see “WSU Parking: Know the Ins and Outs,” with its Top 10 list of violations. The top five are these:
1. Failure to display a valid parking permit.
2. Illegal parking in posted Faculty/Staff parking lots.
3. Failure of a residence hall student to display the special Residence Hall parking permit.
4. Non-visitor parking in a marked Visitor parking space.
5. Parking in a disabled space without an authorized placard or license plate.
WuShock as Muse
Artists have their muses, each one inspiring the creative process in a unique way. This fall, the WSU Alumni Association is sponsoring a WuShock as Muse drawing contest for young, aspiring Shockers who are 4 to 18 years old.
Shock Top
With 68 beers on offer at his bar and grill in Chicago, Brian Wells ’82 has seen many creative names and labels. But none quite like Shock Top, a Belgian-style wheat beer brewed with spices. Shock Top white ale sports a label with a decidedly WuShock-like creature in sunglasses. As Wells says, “It looks like the perfect beer for Shockers.” Wells’ award-winning bar, Crew, just nabbed another honor; it was voted Best Place to Watch a Game on TV by Chicago Reader readers in the alternative paper’s Best of Chicago 2008 listings.
Shockwave Summer
Ask WSU aerospace engineering student Jordan Jensen what he’s been up to this summer and he’s likely to answer, “Oh, shockwave modeling, a bit of thrust vectoring and some fluid dynamics.” As a NASA intern, he makes computer models of shockwaves created by supersonic F-15 jets. Jensen, who grew up in the small Nebraska town of Aurora, has been interested in aerospace engineering and flight since fifth grade. He expects to graduate in 2011, and says he loves his chosen field and the passion his colleagues have for their discipline. “It’s pretty incredible what people can do when they’re motivated.”
T3 WaveRunner
Spurred by high gas prices, WSU Police Department personnel have decided to put the brakes on fuel costs, trading in SUVs for more economical flexible-fuel cars and adding a battery-powered three-wheeled vehicle. The latter, called the T3, operates on pennies a day and is expected to recoup its $8,000 cost in a few years. Plus, WSUPD officers like the way the T3 zips them around campus. “It’s really fun,” says Sgt. Loren Huckstadt. “It’s like a WaveRunner on concrete.”
Winning Streak
Former Wichita State golfer Cameron Bishop never nabbed an individual title during his time on the Shocker squad. But Bishop fs ’07 has been smokin’ hot this summer, winning three Kansas Golf Association titles in two months, including the Kansas Amateur crown in July. Under a scorching sun at the Wichita Country Club, his winning effort included a 15-foot birdie putt to win the par-3 eighth hole and a two-putt birdie from the back edge of the ninth green. Bishop, 24 and an Oklahoma native, credits hard work for the payoff and calls his winning streak “the best summer I’ve had since I’ve been playing.”
