The volleyball roster on goshockers.com lists Emily Stockman at
an even 6 feet, which is apparently a generous measurement. She
says she is only 5-11 — rather small for a hitter.
Nonetheless, Stockman accomplished big things during her recently completed junior season, earning Missouri Valley Conference Player
of the Year honors after helping the Shockers to an historic and record-breaking 30-2 season. (Stockman keeps that MVC honor in the Shocker family, following a two-year reign by Sara Lungren.)
In addition, Stockman was also named an honorable mention All-American.
The lack of height? No problem, obviously.
“I’m not one of the tallest players — I’ve always been one of the smallest hitters on my team — but I have a pretty good vertical,” she says. “For the most part, I have pretty good vision of where my block is and where I can hit. I mix up my shots, too. I can’t just go up and swing away when there’s 6-4, 6-5 girls on the other side of the net.”
While Stockman plans to work on becoming a more well-rounded player, she certainly showed off a variety of skills. She led Wichita State in kills per set (3.65) and aces per set (.29), and she was second in blocks (.58) and digs (3.07).
“She’s a stud, an amazing all-around player,” setter Mary Elizabeth Hooper says. “She’s the one we turn to when we’re losing because she can get the job done. She wants the ball. She wants all the pressure on her.
“I love watching her fly out of the gym and smash the ball.”
