Baseline News

Wichita State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams placed four student-athletes on Missouri Valley Conference All-Conference teams this season. Junior Amanda Cervantes was selected to the singles All-Select team with her play in the No. 1 singles spot.

Freshman Jaime Rodriguez, honored as the Valley Freshman of the Year, was named to the all-conference team at the No. 3 position. Junior Joggan Austin was selected to the team at the No. 4 position, while senior Mark Sewell retained a spot on the conference All-Select team. The women finished the season with a 9-13 record. The men ended with a second-place Valley finish and a 14-11 record — the most wins since 1998 when they won their last Valley championship.

Welcome, Walton

Tim Walton, who has been an assistant softball coach for the past four years at the University of Oklahoma, was named head softball coach at Wichita State on May 29.


Rainbolt, Kaczka Honored

Former Shocker women’s basketball player Jennifer Kaczka and WSU track and field coach Steve Rainbolt, shown above talking with senior Jens Lukoschat, were honored June 25 at the Greater Wichita Area Sports Banquet.

Kaczka, the first WSU women’s basketball player to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in a career was selected as the college female Athlete of the Year. A three-time all-conference selection, she finished her career with 1,016 rebounds (all-time leader) and 1,567 points (second all-time). In addition, she is the program’s all-time leader in free throws made (375) and recorded 35 double-doubles playing in 114 games (tied for second-most all time) during her four-year career.

Rainbolt, in only his second season, led the Shocker men’s outdoor track and field squad to its first team title since 1994 and was selected as the Gene Stephenson Coach of the Year in honor of WSU’s longtime baseball coach. The award was the third for Rainbolt following the 2002 season. He was also named the mvc men’s Coach of the Year as well as the Mondo/United States Track Coaches Association Midwest Regional Coach of the Year.

Shocker Women Place Second at Bowling Nationals

WSU’s women’s bowling team qualified third, behind No. 1 seeded Nebraska and No. 2 seeded Erie Community College, for the double-elimination Intercollegiate Bowling Championships.

Doing The Most

This August, a former Shocker gridiron great will be the first Hispanic coach inducted into the national College Football Hall of Fame.

It's a Wrap

Despite the fact that No. 4 seeded Oral Roberts ended the season too early for No. 1 seeded and regional host Wichita State with a 15-8 win June 1 in NCAA regional tournament action, there’s still plenty of good news to report from Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field.

Third and Moving Up

WSU claims third place in Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy standings, marking a three-year improvement from seventh to third.
