Lifetime Squared

Willa S. McLean '33 has packed a lot of living into 100 years — and counting.

Leaving her hometown of Larned, Kan., shortly after graduating high school, McLean made her way to Wilberforce University in Ohio, where she studied for two years before returning to Kansas to attend the University of Wichita. While at wu, she founded the city chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and went on to hold every office within the organization.

An education graduate, McLean taught in the Wichita public school system for more than 40 years. Before retiring in 1972, she had earned a master's degree in early childhood education and helped guide two of her three sisters through their own teaching careers. She also made time for many volunteer activities in local education and service organizations, including the American Red Cross, ywca, pta and uso.

Although McLean is less visible in her beloved community these days, there are those –– whether former students or fellow volunteers –– who marvel at this centenarian's dedication to teaching and community, and passion for life.
