Marguerite "Mickey"M. (Smith) Miller: Keyboard Companion

Marguerite MillerMarguerite “Mickey” M. (Smith) Miller ’67, professor emeritus of fine arts at Wichita State, taught at the university from 1948-82, serving as chair of the department of keyboard studies and as head of piano pedagogy and group piano programs.

A distinguished recitalist who specialized in one-piano four-hand literature, Miller earned an undergraduate degree in instrumental music education at WSU. She authored “Mosaics,” an anthology of 20th-century piano compositions, and “Piano Teaching Materials.” She was also a prominent adjudicator and clinician for music festivals and auditions throughout the United States.

Her many professional affiliations included serving as associate editor of Keyboard Companion, a quarterly magazine for piano teachers, parents and adult students, and on the Education Advisory Board to the National Piano Foundation.

She also was selected to serve on the editorial committee of the American Music Teacher, the journal of the Music Teachers National Association.

Her many career achievements and awards include being honored with a named endowment to the Music Teachers National Association Foundation and, in 1991, being presented the Kansas Educator of the Year Award for her contributions as a pianist, teacher, author, adjudicator, clinician and consultant.

Marguerite Miller died April 17, 2013, in Kechi, Kan.

After reigning as Homecoming Queen in 1950 and majoring in physical education with a minor in music, Norma J. Haley wed William Smith ’50 in 1951.

Erach R. Talaty: The Chemistry of Teaching

On the first day of his classes, Erach R. Talaty would write “Dr. T” on the blackboard, then explain to his students, “T is for terrible or terrific, whichever – that’s entirely up to you.”
