BRINGING HOME GOLD & SILVER

Wichita State’s women’s crew team, led by coach Calvin Cupp, competed against four other schools in the breezy Baylor Invitational Sept. 27 on the Brazos River in Waco, Texas, bringing home two gold and one silver medal. They were also the Collegiate Women’s Team Points Winner.

ON A WINNING STREAK

The Wichita State volleyball team, coached by Chris Lamb, ended its 2003 home schedule on Nov. 8 with a 3-0 win over Creighton in front of 1,281 fans in Charles Koch Arena, winning by scores of 30-18, 30-21 and 30-18. With this win, WSU increased its match winning streak to seven and its game winning streak to 16. This finale improves the Shockers to 19-7 overall and 12-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, the most wins for a Shocker team since 1992. The 12 Valley wins are the most in school history.

CROSS COUNTRY SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

Wichita State seniors Mickael Colin and Joe Warner have been named to the 2003 Men's Scholar-Athlete Cross Country team. Warner has a 3.76 GPA and is majoring in electrical engineering. Colin has a GPA of 3.15 and is majoring in international business. Colin was also named to the All-Conference team along with teammates Nathan Wadsworth and Desiraye Osburn.

TANDEM TENNIS

The Wichita State men’s tennis team made history when it advanced a doubles team to the National Indoor Individual Championship at the University of Michigan. Senior Juan Escalante and freshman Gabriel Loredo defeated fellow MVC foes Felipe Montenegro and Anthony Perkins of Drake 8-2 in the ITA Region V Doubles Championship. Escalante and Loredo were the first doubles team in school history to advance to the championship. The team later fell in quarterfinals against Michigan.
