B. Karen Hatfield ’79, a medical technology graduate, has been promoted to the rank of colonel, U.S. Army, in a ceremony held this past August in Eastover, S.C.
A member of the South Carolina National Guard in Columbia, Hatfield has served primarily as a laboratory officer, including a deployment to Saudi Arabia in 1991 as the section leader of a multinational hospital laboratory.
While serving she was appointed the first deputy state surgeon of the SC Army National Guard and also served as deputy commander of administrative services with SCARNG Medical Detachment. Her most recent assignment at the medical detachment was assuming the role as deputy commander of clinical services in July 2014.
Among her many accomplishments and awards are counted two Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Accommodation Medals, a Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
An active member of the Dalmation Club of America, this Shocker alumna has two show Dals who routinely make visits to the local Veterans Hospital as therapy dogs.
