Robert F. Achilles ’55/68, retired communication disorders and sciences professional, author, researcher and educator who served as director of speech and hearing at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center, Baltimore, Md.; as director of clinical services at the Institute of Logopedics and lecturer and instructor in the department of communication disorders at Wichita State; and as director of the Speech and Hearing Center and professor of speech at Lamar State College in Beaumont, Texas, where he retired as professor emeritus of communication disorders, Nov. 13, 2014, South Hutchinson, Kan.

Richard T. Ballinger ’74, WSU psychology graduate and avid Shocker sports fan who earned a law degree from Washburn University in 1976 and soon after graduation went to work for the Sedgwick County District Attorney in Wichita, former municipal court judge in Derby, Kan., and a longtime Sedgwick County District Court Judge who was first appointed to the 18th Judicial District in 1992 and later served as chief judge from 2003 to 2006, Jan. 23, 2015, Derby.

Mary Ellen (Brosius) Barrier ’40, homemaker, retired president of Barrier’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts, former University of Wichita cheerleader and longtime WSU supporter who in 1993 established the John R. John F. Sheaks fs ’35, retired accountant and businessman who owned and operated a number of businesses in north Wichita, including restaurants and grocery, furniture and appliance stores, and who worked in finance, insurance and real estate, being among the developers of Wichita’s Crestview Country Club area, July 11, 2014, Wichita. At the age of 92 (Sheaks lived to be 101), he is quoted in the Wichita Eagle as saying during a 2005 address to the Kiwanis Club of Wichita: “I never thought I’d live long enough that the most important objective in my life would be to pass the driver’s exam.”
