Wholehearted Shocker

BY CONNIE KACHEL WHITE

Glenn Patrick McCartyAs a student at Wichita State, Glenn Patrick McCarty ’66 ran cross country and track, majored in business and was known on campus as Pat. Years later, he would pick up another nickname – Pop.

McCarty joined the Shocker track team and the five-man freshman cross country team for the 1962-63 season. For the next three years, he was a member of the track team and the varsity cross country team, helping his teammates compete for Missouri Valley Conference accolades.

As a senior, he contributed to a second place finish for both the track and cross country squads in the MVC Championship meet.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, McCarty served in Vietnam from 1967-1969 as a captain in the U.S. Army. Once back in the states, he attended the Washburn University School of Law in

Topeka, Kan., from which he earned the Juris Doctor in 1971.

His career included serving as senior vice president and senior trust officer at the First National Bank of Santa Fe in Santa Fe, N.M.

“My father was an avid supporter of the Shockers,” says Kimberly McCarty-Jenkins, one of McCarty’s four children: three daughters and a son. “He believed wholeheartedly in the Wichita State Shockers.”

A lifelong runner who loved playing with his children and 16 grandchildren and three great-grandkids – especially outdoors – Pop McCarty died May 6, 2014, in Louisville, Ky.
