Teacher Leader

Wilma I. (Dettmer) Kuhlman ’91Wilma I. (Dettmer) Kuhlman ’91, who holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Bethany College, a master’s degree in educational psychology from Wichita State and a PhD in elementary education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, is one of nine faculty members awarded Alumni Outstanding Teaching Awards on April 16 by the University of Nebraska at Omaha Alumni Association.

Established in 1997 to honor distinguished teaching in the classroom, the UNOAA’s awards program has issued a total of $167,000 through the years to its honorees, each of whom has received a $1,000 award.

Kuhlman, a professor in UNO’s College of Education, has taught at the university since 1995. With her educational focus on graduate and undergraduate literacy education, she coordinates the Master of Science in Literacy program for teachers who are literacy leaders in diverse school settings.

She also is co-founder and director of the Oxbow Writing Project, UNO’s site of the National Writing Project, which works to provide teachers with the skills and resources to improve writing and learning in the nation’s schools.

A resident of Bellevue, Neb., Kuhlman also has helped develop and coordinate educational culture walks for teacher candidates and others – ever working to improve learning for all learners.

Master Voice Teacher

Lyric baritone Jonathan Retzlaff ’81, who was associate professor of voice at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, has joined the voice faculty at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

Representing her home state of Kansas, Laura Schlapp ’13 was crowned First Runner-up during the Cherry Blossom Festival this past April in Washington, D.C.
