David RohrWichita State graphic design graduate David Rohr ’84 nabbed national honors in May for his design of New Mexico’s centennial license plate.

Lauded as “simple but elegant” and “a proud symbol of New Mexico’s heritage,” the turquoise tag was voted the nation’s best of 2010 by members of the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association.

Rohr, who’s creative director in the museum resources division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, employed his interest in history to create the winning plate, which features the Zia sun symbol, a Native American design that has been an element of the state tags since 1927.

Counted among Rohr’s other recent projects are a touch-screen exhibit on railroad history for the state’s traveling museum, the Van of Enchantment, and a video interactive for the Lincoln State Monument exhibitions in Lincoln County, the territory of the infamous Lincoln County Wars and the stomping grounds of Billy the Kid.

Prior to his work in the Land of Enchantment, Rohr served as assistant art director at Art in America magazine in New York City. Today, he and his wife, Roni, live in Santa Fe with their two children, Amy and Matthew.
