Cameron Bishop

Leading the Shocker Pack

Through the first few weeks of the fall golf season, Cameron Bishop found himself in an unusual place: the fairway.

Distance off the tee has never been a problem for Bishop, but he struggled to keep the ball out of the rough during his first two years as a Shocker. No longer. "I'm playing a lot better this season — finally learned to hit a dang fairway," he says with a laugh.

Bishop, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., led the team with a stroke average of 71.3 after three fall tournaments. Helped by a 4-under-par 68 in the first round, he tied for 10th at the competitive Wolf Pack Classic in late September in Reno, Nev. "Cameron is capable anywhere on the course," Shocker coach Grier Jones says. "He's got some length, and he's a good putter. He doesn't have any glaring weakness."

In addition to providing low numbers, Bishop is also being counted on to lead an extremely young team. He's the lone junior on a squad with six freshmen and one sophomore.

"These young guys are used to being in high school and joking around all the time," Bishop says. "They don't realize how serious you have to be, so I've been trying to help everybody stay focused."
