Since her teenage days of camping and hiking in Colorado, Nancy Moore '67/71 has taken a giant step — up. Though the Texas native has been an outdoors enthusiast for most of her life, her mountain trekking began in 1985 in the Himalaya range after she responded to an adventure tour company advertisement that read, "Why not escape to Nepal?"
Moore packed her bags for a trek to a region of Asia that draws visitors for its adventurous and aesthetic appeal. "What attracts me to trekking is the beauty of the mountains and my love of hiking," the Wichita resident says.
Since her first trip, Moore, who has since retired as a Boeing engineer, has trekked abroad about every two years. Her most recent trip was to the Ladakh region of northern India in the summer of 1998. She's also trekked in Bhutan, Nepal, Peru and Africa. In October Moore and her sister will tackle trails in northeast India's Sikkim region. Moore has stood at 18,600 feet, about two miles shy of the highest elevation on earth, the Himalaya's 29,000-foot Mount Everest summit.
And her plans continue to elevate. She'd like to trek Pakistan's K2, the second highest mountain in the world.
