Coleman Hill

Fans in the outfield bleachers at Eck Stadium Home of Tyler Field will enjoy their baseball and picnics in style next season.

The Coleman Co. announced in September a half million-dollar gift to Wichita State to enhance WSU's world-class baseball facilities. The outfield hill area will be named Coleman Hill in recognition of the donation.

"I'm excited about Coleman Hill. It adds another area of entertainment and recreation for our fans. I can't wait to see it built."

"We are very appreciative of the generous support of The Coleman Co.," says WSU President Don Beggs. "The timing of the gift is outstanding, coming as it does during the current stadium renovation. The gift is particularly gratifying because it benefits both student athletes who play baseball and our loyal fans."

The Coleman gift will result in improvements on and off the field. On the infield, work is under way to install new artificial turf. The remainder of the gift will benefit the fans who watch Shocker baseball from the outfield hill. The gift provides for the addition of two pavilions and work on the terraces.

The pavilions, which may be reserved for special events, will feature two covered, split-level hardwood decks with storage for chairs. One pavilion will include a fireplace. Coleman will also provide chairs, grills and other products to be used in the pavilions. The improvements will complement the grass seating areas that remain beyond the outfield fence.

"The Coleman Co. is very pleased to assist Wichita State and its championship baseball program with these stadium and field enhancements," says Bill Phillips, company president. "This community and the university have been extremely supportive of Coleman and its people. This is one way we can give back to the city, WSU and Shocker baseball. We think (Coleman Hill) preserves the long-standing tradition and ambiance of ‘the hill,' while adding more facility and versatility for fans who enjoy watching ball games from that perspective. It's also a perfect fit for Coleman and the many products we manufacture here in Wichita that fans routinely use for picnics and tailgating at games."

WSU Athletics Director Jim Schaus adds, "I can't wait to see it built."
