The Future of the Roundhouse

BY JIM SCHAUS, WSU ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

Henry Levitt Arena. When you hear that, what images come to mind? Perhaps memorable Wichita State Shocker basketball games, teams or players.

There is also the classic round-house configuration that produces a festive and raucous basketball environment. Although these are common attributes of Levitt Arena, its use and value offers so much more to Shocker athletics, WSU and the greater Wichita community.

The athletics department recently announced a six-month study to review the concept of renovating Levitt Arena. There was a resounding consensus among supporters to keep basketball on campus, and that this renovation would best address the goal of rebuilding the men's basketball program to national prominence.

Undoubtedly, quality facilities play a key role in recruiting, maximizing attendance and revenues, plus the overall success of any athletic program. I firmly believe that this could be the most important project for WSU athletics for the next 20 years, but I also feel it represents significant worth to the entire university and community.

Renowned sports architect HOK has been working diligently with staff, coaches and various constituents to formulate a project vision. The end objective is to strategically determine the scope of the project and to outline its financial feasibility. It is my hope that support for the project will allow us to move forward this April to launch a fund-raising campaign to make it a reality. It will not be easy. The potential financial goal will be significant. But, with the support of the community, I am confident we can do this.

Levitt Arena represents more than the men's basketball facility. It is also the home of the women's basketball and volleyball programs, not to mention all administrative offices. Levitt Arena is used for graduation ceremonies and a variety of other university activities.

It also hosts an array of community events including the Shrine Circus, high school and junior college basketball games, speaker forums and general recreation. A renovated and climate-controlled facility would offer even more event opportunities for the entire region.

The success of this project is critical, because it will help build a quality athletic program, which in turn is good for Wichita. We have stated that we desire to be Wichita's "Hometown Team." It doesn't matter where one is from, if they attended college, if they live in Wichita, supporting the Shockers is good for WSU and the entire Wichita community in terms of quality of life and nationwide notoriety. The next time you hear the name Levitt Arena, just remember that it represents more than a basketball arena.

The proposed renovation project may indeed become the impetus behind the resurgence of Shocker basketball, demonstrated by improved recruiting, conference titles, NCAA tournament appearances and getting the Roundhouse rocking again. That would be truly exciting.

But one thing is for sure: a rejuvenated Levitt Arena would carve an indelible impression upon Wichita for many years to come. And, perhaps, garner the most coveted prize of all to any community: civic pride.

I encourage suggestions of feedback regarding what elements should be considered in the proposed renovation project.
