Members of Wichita State’s Greek community compete during
the Shock the Yard Step Show on April 29. The annual event
is sponsored by WSU’s Multicultural Greek Council.

The 8th Annual Multicultural Greek Council “Shock the Yard” Step Show livened up post-basketball quiet Charles Koch Arena on April 29. Each year for the past eight seasons, Shock the Yard participants have shared the history and traditions of stepping and strolling, while competing for top Shock the Yard honors.

“Stepping,” by the way, is creating beats and sounds using parts of the body, as well as coordinating synchronized dances in a formation.

This year, the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority stepped its way to the win in the on-campus division, while the Delta Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity took second place in the on-campus division. The Sigma Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was awarded first place in the event’s off-campus division.

Through the years, the step show has taken place at a variety of locations, the Miller Concert Hall on campus, for one, and the Orpheum Theater off campus, as another example. But with growing audiences for the show, it seems Shock the Yard has found a natural home site at Koch Arena.

Next year’s event is slated for a 7 p.m. kick-off on April 28, 2018. Team registration and sponsorship opportunities for the 9th annual show will be available on Sept. 1, 2017.
