Our Shocker Admiral

BY JESSICA SEIBEL '08

Wendy JohnsonWendy Johnson ’87/99 is a skilled communicator and a passionate advocate for education, the arts, the community and, of course, Riverfest. On March 8, when Johnson was revealed as the 44th Admiral Windwagon Smith, the 2017 ambassador for the June 2-10 Wichita Riverfest, her passion and vivacity were on full display.

“I couldn’t be more excited and humbled to be joining your ranks,” she told a group of former Admirals in attendance at a press conference at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview. “This is just about the coolest doggone thing I could ever imagine.”

Also at the celebratory event were members of Johnson’s family; Wichita public schools colleagues (she is marketing/communications division director for the school district); Riverfest volunteers and the Prairie Schooner Mates representing area high schools; and WuShock.

Her Shocker pride runs deep, as she earned both a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in public administration from WSU.

Her community pride runs deep as well. “I love Wichita,” she says. “I hope that as you all experience Riverfest, you celebrate everything that is so great about Wichita.”
