Dave The Rave

BY CONNIE KACHEL WHITE

Dave StallworthThere’s not going to be any past tense usage in this In Memoriam tribute. Dave Stallworth fs ’65 is a Shocker basketball legend. His No. 42 jersey, one of only five to be retired, hangs high from the rafters of Charles Koch Arena.

His Wichita State tally for most 30-point games in a career, 20, and his career scoring average of 24.2 count as two WSU records he holds. He is a charter member of the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame (1980) and the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame (1997).

Stallworth’s All American career features his scoring 46 points in Wichita State’s upset of the No. 1 Cincinnati Bearcats, 65-64, on Feb. 16, 1963 at home in the Roundhouse; his leading the Shockers to NCAA tournament appearances in the 1963-64 and 1964-65 seasons; and playing pro for nearly a decade with the New York Knicks and Baltimore Bullets.

“For the record,” writes Marilyn Gerber, “it’s because of this man I’m a Shocker fan.” Many other Shocker fans can say the same. To them, David A. Stallworth is forever “The Rave,” one of the best of the best to ever play Shocker basketball. The date of his death: March 15, 2017, in Wichita.
