Dear Shockers:
This fall has been a wonderful blur of activities that have brought Shockers together. The university ushered in the fall semester with a campus-wide Convocation. The alumni association welcomed new Shocker coach Gregg Marshall by featuring him as our first speaker in the WSU Distinguished Alumni Speaker Breakfast Series.
More than 500 people came out to meet him! Kate Harkness, a member of our WSU nursing faculty and an Air National Guard reservist who returned last May from a deployment to Iraq, inspired us with her story as our second series speaker, and we’re looking forward to our three exceptional upcoming speakers. Members of the WSU Alumni Awards Committee have selected six outstanding 2007 honorees, each of whom has a truly uplifting story of accomplishment and service to share. You will want to mark your calendar for our celebration of these extraordinary Shockers. Our awards banquet is set for Jan. 31, 2008.
Among the events the association has sponsored or assisted with is the university’s first African American Reunion, a four-day event Oct. 4-7 that brought back to campus a vibrant group of Shockers who bonded during the tumultuous years from 1964-74. I was deeply moved by the stories of courage, determination — and of humor — that I heard during this landmark event.
Together for WSU,
Debbie Kennedy ’94
