Public Accolades

BY CONNIE KACHEL WHITE

Kathy Sexton

Kathy (Bradshaw) Sexton ’89/92 has added another accolade to her growing list of honors in the public service arena.

The city manager of Derby Kan., the state’s 18th largest city, was recognized with the 2008 Alumni Award for Outstanding Public Service at the Hugo Wall School’s celebration of excellence and commencement luncheon this past May.

Sexton, who’s served as Derby’s manager since March 2006, oversees a budget of $25 million and 158 full-time employees. From 2001 to 2006, she was Sedgwick County’s assistant county manager, helping administrate the urban/rural organization’s $345 million budget and 2,700 FTE positions.

A native Kansan and proud Shocker, Sexton is noted for carving time out of her demanding schedule to support her state, community and alma mater. On the WSU side of things, for instance, she was key in the establishment of the Hugo Wall School Advisory Board, for which she served as its first president in 2007-08.

She also founded the Capital-Area Alumni Chapter of the WSU Alumni Association when she worked in Topeka
from 1992-95 in the governor’s budget office. And she’s a past president of the alumni association, serving in
2004-05.

Among her many other affiliations and honors are membership in Rotary Club of Derby, Junior League of Wichita, Visioneering Wichita’s Health Care Alliance and being named one of the Wichita Business Journal’s Top 20 Women in Business in 2004.
