Led by Experience

M. Stojkic
Martina Stojkic

After finishing fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference last year, the women’s tennis team completed the fall 2001 season reserved for individual play with a 19-22 record overall. WSU was led by experience, notably senior Martina Stojkic, who finished the fall with a 4-2 record in individual singles play. Junior Amanda Cervantes also posted a winning record (5-4) in singles. Head Coach Les Stafford’s 2002 team picked up its first win Feb. 8 against North Texas, but is struggling to find its balance with five losses as of March 15.

A Tough Schedule

WSU’s men’s tennis team is fighting its way through one of the toughest schedules the Shockers have faced in years. Included are matchups against four of the country’s top-21 teams. As of March 15, the Shockers, who were defeated Feb. 17 by 17th ranked South Alabama, will take on No. 16 Baylor March 16, No. 21 Texas in Austin March 18 and No. 9 SMU March 21. Roundhouse

After 47 years and 685 men’s basketball games, Henry Levitt Arena, which originally opened in 1955 as the wsu Field House, closed for extensive renovations after the final men’s basketball game of the season Feb. 25. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the $25 million Charles Koch Arena and other sports complex buildings were held March 15. In February, Wichita State awarded the contract for construction of the Roundhouse Renaissance project to Dondlinger & Sons Construction, the firm that was also the original contractor for the field house in 1955. Construction is anticipated to conclude in late summer or early fall 2003. The arena’s lifetime win-loss record for men’s basketball stands at an impressive 502-183.

Tee Time

The WSU men’s golf team teed off the season with a third place finish at the 11-team Udamon Southwest Classic Feb. 18-19 in Victoria, Texas — and then went on to win the 16-team UTSA Invitational Feb. 25-26 in San Antonio, Texas, and the 10-team Herb Wimberly Collegiate Classic March 1-2 in Las Cruces, N.M.
