More than 300 Wichita State alumni and friends attended the 47th Annual WSU Alumni Association Awards Banquet Feb. 13 at the Olive Tree Banquet Hall.

A champagne reception, music by Bill Thomson ’63/65 on piano and Tom Fowler ’68/79, saxophone, plus two big screens for video presentations highlighting past honorees helped set the stage for the 2002 awards ceremony.

Honored were Daniel M. Carney ’53, Achievement Award; Christopher S. Shank ’69, Alumni Recognition Award; Dr. Dharma deSilva, Faculty Recognition Award; Julia E. Lee, the Laura M. Cross Distinguished Service Award; and Kathleen B. Sexton ’89/92 and Dr. Eric L. Sexton ’87/92, the Young Alumni Award.

The Achievement Award is the highest honor given to an alumnus of Wichita State by the alumni association. Recognition Awards are presented to alumni and faculty or friends of the university for particular service to Wichita State or the alumni association.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented to an employee or retired employee of WSU who has provided exceptional service to the university, and the Young Alumni Award recognizes the accomplishments of WSU graduates 40 years old or younger.

David Dahl ’71/74, a Wichita attorney, served as emcee for the gala event, which also featured video commentary about each of the honorees from Larry Hatteberg fs ’68, as well as remarks from WSU President Donald Beggs, WSU Alumni Association President Jeff DeGraffenreid ’88 and WSU Alumni Awards Committee Chair Pamela Clancy ’80, who thanked committee members Mickey Armstrong ’45, Brad Beets ’87, Beggs, Trish Brasted ’96, DeGraffenreid, Noel Estep ’52, Jeff Gates ’98/98, Cleo Littleton ’55 and Bill Wiesner ’59  for their hard work in selecting the 2002 honorees.

March Madness

As WSU’s men’s basketball team was battling its way through the MVC Tournament in St. Louis, Shocker fans of all ages were enjoying themselves not only at the games but also at pep rallies hosted by the Alumni Association.
