WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI MAGAZINE
Summer 2002

Director's Corner

As I write this message, the alumni association has just wrapped up hosting a number of spring activities, including the Shocker Open golf tournament and the 50-year reunion for the University of Wichita’s class of 1952.

The participants in these and other association and university activities demonstrate the excitement and vitality that has always energized this university. It may sound like a cliché, but I know every day is a great day to be a Shocker!

This summer, as we look forward to a new fall semester, I encourage you to ask, What can I do to assist Wichita State? You may be inspired to donate your time, talents or dollars to such pursuits as helping recruit students or giving to one of the many scholarship funds maintained by the wsu Foundation. Yet I realize we can’t all give substantial amounts of time and money.

So here are two ways of supporting wsu that don’t take much time or money, but are key to the health of our university. First, as an alum, talk proudly about Wichita State and the wonderful opportunities your wsu education provided you. Second, encourage fellow alumni who aren’t members of the association to join. For as little as $30 a year, they can show their Shocker pride and support the many important programs and publications that are sponsored by the association.

Have a great summer!

President's Corner

I was honored to have the opportunity to offer a few remarks at last fall’s President’s Gala. Among other observations, I spoke of my affinity with our alma mater, saying that my grandfather taught me an understanding of and a love for Wichita, Fairmount College and the University of Wichita.
