LOS ANGELES
A Day of Wine Tasting

KANSAS CARAVANS

This September the Shocker Caravan, featuring coaches and other special university guests, made stops in two Kansas towns: Great Bend and Topeka. On Sept. 5, guests from Topeka were treated to news about  athletics and academics at Wichita State from men’s basketball coach  Mark Turgeon and Elizabeth King, WSU vice president of university advancement. Alan ’88 and Holly ’91 Cobb helped welcome guests, who included David Beck ’77, Eric Boling ’90, Brian ’96 and Joy ’00 Heinrichs, Ed Field ’72, Anita Leonard ’77,  Jim Mullins ’71 and Steven ’69 and Carol Naylor.

WICHITA
Alumni Awards Banquet

Thu., Feb. 13, 2003; 6 p.m. — WSU Alumni Awards Banquet at the Olive Tree Banquet Hall. The gala evening begins with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the presentation of awards at 7. Recipients  will be honored in the areas of Achievement, Recognition, Young Alumnus/Alumna and Service. Winners will be announced in the next issue of The Shocker. Bowling Blowout

Sat., May 3, 2003; 6-9 p.m. — Put together a team of four and compete against fellow alums, recent grads and Shocker supporters in the third annual Shocker Bowling Blowout, sponsored by the WSU Young Alumni Connection, at Northrock Lanes. Class of 1953 Reunion

Thu.-Sat., May 15-17, 2003 —University of Wichita Class of 1953 50-Year Reunion, on the campus of Wichita State University. Events feature a welcome reception, campus tours, class brunch, commencement ceremonies and a special luncheon during which all returning graduates will be inducted into WSU’s 50-Year Club and awarded commemorative medallions. Fashion Show

Fri., April 11, 2003; 11:30 a.m. —It’s hip, it’s happening and it promises to be shockingly stylish! It’s the WSU Alumni Fashion Show at the Olive Tree Banquet Hall. The event features not only the hottest spring and summer clothes modeled by some of WSU’s most fashionable alumni, but also an elegant luncheon and commentary by emcee Bonnie Bing ’70/76, Wichita’s own fashion guru. Mini Membership Drive

Oct. 29-Dec. 17 — WSU Alumni Association Mini Membership Drive, the second of four during 2002-03. Led by volunteer captains, teams of association members vie to entice new members into Wichita State’s oldest and largest support organization. Nursing Alumni Society

During the first days of the fall semester, members of the WSU Nursing Alumni Society hosted orientations for new undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Greeting the new Shockers were Society President Victoria Mosack ’80/92, College of Health Professions Dean Peter Cohen and WSU Alumni Association Executive Director Brad Beets ’87. Shocker Baseball Tent Party

Sat., April 26, 2003; 11 a.m. — Join the Young Alumni Connection for a tent party prior to the WSU baseball doubleheader vs. Creighton. Festivities begin at 11 a.m., followed by Shocker baseball at 2 p.m. Look for the yellow-and-white alumni tent just west of Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field. Shocker Basketball Pep Rally

Sat., Dec. 14; 5-6:45 p.m. — Prepare to “Cook the Cat” prior to the Wichita State vs. Kansas State men’s basketball showdown. Wear your black and gold to cheer on your Shocks as they battle for in-state bragging rights against the Wildcats. The pregame tailgate party will be held in Pavilion II of the Kansas Coliseum. Shocker Honors Banquet

Participating members of the WSU Alumni Association helped host the third annual Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet Oct. 1 in celebration of the academic successes of the area’s top high school juniors. Prospective Wichita State students dined with alumni and current students, and learned more about educational opportunities at WSU. Among those serving on the event’s planning committee were Lillian Gattis ’84, Kevin Clark ’84, Cramer Reed ’37, Clay Nickel ’96, Gladys Alley ’75 and Max Hubbard ’57. Cookin' Up Shocker Fun

The WSU Student Alumni Association (SAA, for those in the know) has a serious mission: building Shocker tradition, spirit and loyalty through various events and philanthropic projects. But along the way, SAA members have developed quite a reputation for fun.

WuTag and Legacy Scholarship Recipients Honored

To date, more than $70,000 has been added to Wichita State’s general scholarship fund by the “Drive Your Pride” WSU License Plate Scholarship Program, which is managed by the WSU Alumni Association.

Dare to Come ... The Blair Wu Project. Years ago, an intrepid group of Shocker faithful headed for the deep Wichita woods. Their mission: to raise funds in support of higher education at Wichita State. It was supposed to be a routine trip — but they were never heard from again.
