ARIZONA

Shocker Open

Tue., Mar. 18; 7:30 a.m. — Arizona Shocker Open, Dobson Ranch Golf Course, Mesa, Ariz. Vic Heckart '62 and other Phoenix-area alumni invite alumni and supporters to tee off with fellow Shockers at this annual tournament, which will be played on greens twice voted "Best Public Golf Course." Shocker Spirit

Bob Schutte '67/69 and the Central Illinois Chapter hosted a reception and dinner for the women's basketball team and for special guests WSU President Don and First Lady Shirley Beggs on Jan. 17. Watch for the event wrap-up in the next issue of The Shocker.


RILEY COUNTY

A Premier Event

Brian '96 and Joy '00 Heinrichs hosted the first-ever Riley County Chapter event Dec. 4. Kip Lee '82/96, Steve and Terri '91 Olson and Tim '92 and Donalyn '89 Rhodes joined the Heinrichs in cheering on the Shockers against Tulsa during a basketball watch party. A Presidential Gathering

WSU President Don and First Lady Shirley Beggs and the WSU Alumni Association hosted a reception for San Francisco-area alumni at the Pan Pacific Hotel on Jan. 11. Watch for the wrap-up of this presidential gathering in the next issue of The Shocker.


WICHITA

Alumni Awards Banquet

Bowling Blowout

Sat., May 3; 6-9 p.m. — Shocker Bowling Blowout, Northrock Lanes. Put together a team of four and compete against fellow alums, recent grads and Shocker supporters in the third annual bowling tournament sponsored by the WSU Young Alumni Connection. Class of 1953 Reunion

Thu.-Sat., May 15-17 — University of Wichita Class of 1953 50-Year Reunion, on the campus of Wichita State University. Activities include a welcome reception, campus tours, class brunch, commencement ceremonies and a special luncheon during which all returning graduates will be inducted into WSU's 50-Year Club and awarded commemorative medallions. Cook the Cat

Some 300 Shocker fans gathered to "cook the cat" during a rally Dec. 14 before the Wichita State vs. Kansas State men's basketball showdown at the Kansas Coliseum. Sad to say, the Wildcats bested the Shockers, but that hasn't dampened alumni plans for next year's intrastate rivalry.

Fashion Show

Food, Fun & Baseball

Sat., April 26, 2003; 11 a.m. — Spring Fling, under the "big top." Join hosts from the association's Young Alumni Connection for a tent party prior to the WSU baseball doubleheader vs. Creighton. Fun for the entire family begins at 11 a.m., followed by Shocker baseball at 2 p.m. Look for the yellow-and-white alumni tent near Eck Stadium. Membership Mini-Drives. To increase membership and build awareness about the many programs sponsored by the association, all members are invited to get involved in the association's ongoing seven-week mini-drive. Sign on as either a team captain or a team member — and join other great volunteers in supporting higher education at Wichita State. (A Spring Membership Mini-Drive is set to begin Tue., Apr. 22.) Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet

Some 40 WSU alumni hosted more than 400 prospective Wichita State students and guests at the annual Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet on Oct. 1. Those in attendance heard from Jeff DeGraffenreid '88, Kaye Monk-Morgan '93/96 and WSU President Don Beggs. Stephanie Knebel '93, Erin King '99, Deanne Fortney '59/74, Chris Shank '69, Ron Holt '77 and Nick Stone '02 were among the alumni table hosts who provided a graduate's perspective on the benefits of a WSU education.
