Blair Wu Project

Shockers dared the deep, dark Blair Wu woods for a frightfully fun night in support of higher education at Wichita State.

From left, Bryan Frye, Denise Ziegler, Jeff DeGraffenreid, Sheryl Wohlford and Steve Onken were key to the success of the 23rd Annual Shocker Auction, The Blair Wu Project.

A backdrop of fall branches and leaves, pumpkins and hay bales set the stage for a night of frightful fun for the 700 revelers who dared to attend the Oct. 26 Blair Wu Project at the Kansas Coliseum’s Pavilion II.

Event co-chairs Bryan Frye ’87/88 and Steve Onken greeted guests and helped guide them through the myriad activities of the 23rd Annual Shocker Auction, while the Blair Wu himself lurked in the background. By night’s end, the event had scared up more than $130,000 in support of alumni and university programs, projects and publications as well as student scholarship opportunities at Wichita State.

After pumpkin bowling, psychic readings and the silent auction came to a close, attention turned to the incomparable live auction. Master of ceremonies Randy Brown introduced Ron Bogle, who donated his auctioneering talents with the help of his crew. The high purchasers of the night were Terri ’80/90 and David Moses, who drove away with a brand-new Chevy S-10 Crew Cab pickup donated by Davis-Moore Chevrolet.

Other big-selling items included two shopping sprees donated by Bradley Fair, a golf outing and dinner with wsu basketball coaches Mark Turgeon and Darryl Smith, and a Vespa ET2 Scooter contributed by Vespa Wichita. Following live auction action, the fun continued with dancing to the blues music of 2drinkminimum.

Among those attending were Jeff DeGraffenreid ’88, president of the wsu Alumni Association, and his wife, Kelley ’01, Gladys ’75 and Buck Alley, Trish ’96 and Ken ’91 Brasted, Barbara and Mark Chamberlin, Susan ’78/02 and David ’71/75 Eastman, Diana Fredelake, Patricia and Dawson Grimsley, Phyllis Guinn, Elizabeth and Don King, Barbara ’90 and John ’69 Osborne, Kathy ’89/92 and Eric ’87/92 Sexton, Mike Steven, Sheryl ’82 and Doug ’80 Wohlford, and Denise ’79 and Jim ’79 Ziegler.
